This month, we watched the Olympics. At the office, we huddled breathlessly around laptops showing halting streams of swimming heats and track finals. We whooped and hollered as we witnessed the pursuit of gold and glory. Unsurprisingly, we fixated on the games as a series of ennobling grooming narratives. We had more questions than answers. Luckily, gold medalist Garrett Weber-Gale filled us in on the Olympic swimmer’s shaving routine. In the service of elevating our own workout, and the workout of every weekend warrior, we assembled the ultimate Olympic dopp kit.
Above all, the London games got us thinking about the meaning of perfection. We discovered the perfect T-shirt in our August box. The slim fit was perfect. The color was perfect. The sleeves were perfect. Our exposed biceps…were not perfect.
Perfection is a work in progress. It means perpetual hard work, adjustment, and fine-tuning. So we hit the books. Our research took us all the way from the basics of style, to graduate-level studies of ‘Sprezzatura’.
The passing of legendary writer and aphorist Gore Vidal, knocked some sense into us, and put the whole question into stark relief. As he famously said, “Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”
Here's to all the tweaking, tinkering, and fine-tuning it takes to figure out who you are and what you want to say.
Let's review some highlights from The Guide this month...
We finally stepped in front of the camera, launching our first crop of Birchbox Man videos. Being in front of the camera forced us to clean up our act, even as we were (hopefully) helping you do the same.
We even worked up enough confidence and moxie to school an unsuspecting school-builder to the grooming game.
We sat for a traditional Turkish shave and had our ear hairs singed off.
Luckily, there’s still whiskey. At the conclusion of a long week, we celebrated with a little office happy hour inspired by our friends at the Overserved Society](http://birch.ly/Qu6rGJ). Their recipe for the whiskey smash didn’t not disappoint.
The genius of Breaking Bad captured our attention like no other show has in some time. Who knew baldness as a symbol of power could be so compelling. We’re almost inspired to shave our head. Who knows, maybe it’ll make us faster in the water for 2016 in Rio.
