Great Grooming Moments in Film: The 40-Year-Old Virgin

We’re pretty big film buffs at Birchbox Man. And, of course, grooming is our bread and butter. This dual geekery drives us to comb through crates of old film reels and hours of commercial-packed TBS to find and pay homage to the legendary shavers and shampooers of the silver screen.

The Scene

When Andy Stitzer's (Steve Carrell) electronics store coworkers decide to help him lose his virginity, part of project upgrade is a brutal hair removal scene. As the video below reveals, no green screen technology was employed to fake this punishing visit to the chest waxer. Carrell hides behind no Hollywood smoke and mirrors—that is pure method acting by a dedicated thespian.

Warning: For a guy who is supposed to be cleaning up his act, the hirsute Carrell does not rein in the cursing in this clip. Beware of many creative expletives.

The Fix

While the viewer isn’t privy to the aftermath of this painful session, we’re guessing that the redness and irritation Carrell’s character (and Carrell himself) experiences is enough to take the guy’s mind off of the 40-year drought for at least a while. If you ever find yourself in this fix, we recommend grabbing some Neosporin, hydrocortisone cream, or aloe and applying liberally.
