Your dad may have taught you how to knot a tie, but chances are he didn’t teach you how to fold a pocket square. Once considered an emblem of dapper British gents and country clubbers, these manly accessories are popping up in well-cut blazers everywhere. But learning how to transform a pane of silk into a neat triangle can make you feel like a kindergartener attempting his first origami project. Luckily, we’re here to show you, step by step.

What You Need:

Pocket Square, Nimble Hands, Two Minutes of Spare Time

  • Step 1 Step 1: Lay your pocket square on a flat tabletop with the corners facing up and down. It should look like a baseball diamond.

  • Step 2 Step 2: Fold the square across the middle, bringing the bottom point to the top point to create a triangle.

  • Step 3
Step 3: Bring the left corner of the triangle across and fold slightly left of center.

  • Step 4 Step 4: Bring the right corner of the triangle across, as if you’re creating a pocket square burrito.

  • Step 5 Step 5: Fold the left triangular piece sticking out underneath. You should now have a long rectangle with a pointed top.

  • Step 6 Step 6: Fold the rectangle in half by bringing the bottom towards the top. Make sure to leave the point intact.

  • Step 7 Step 7: Flip your newly folded pocket square over, and tuck it into your jacket. Adjust the top until you have the desired amount of point peeking through. Smile, and swagger out the door.
