Summer Friday Style: Anthony Urbano of Closet Freaks

If we could extend one fleeting moment, it would be the euphoria that sets in on the Friday afternoon elevator ride down to the lobby and peaks as we push our way through the revolving doors and into the balmy summer air. It’s a moment of great promise, with an afternoon of possibility—and the whole weekend—sprawling before us. To cap off a month dedicated to all things “off duty,” we tapped a few of our favorite menswear bloggers for their ideal summer Friday, from the shoes to the cocktails. Here, Anthony Urbano of Closet Freaks takes us through his beach hooky day essentials, from the sunglasses to the lobster rolls.

My Perfect Summer Friday:
My job as a structural engineer in New York City requires me to spend a lot of time either buried under stacks of design drawings in the office or getting down and dirty doing surveys and inspections at gritty construction sites. My perfect summer Friday would start with the latter, ideally exploring a renovated brownstone site in the West Village. From there it’s an easy walk over to the Path train back to my home in Jersey City, where I can get ready for a day of playing hooky at the Jersey Shore.

Right now my summer beach look is what I like to call the retro "cool dad.” It’s a vintage ‘50s/’60s theme—think Don Draper on vacation in California. I'd throw on my slim fit American Apparel swim shorts and wear a tipped polo like the Penguin Earl polo or maybe a vintage button down with a banded bottom for a throwback summer vibe. I'd keep my footwear lightweight and simple with a pair of off white canvas sneaks from Vans Authentics. Can’t hit the beach without a classic pair of round tortoise shell sunglasses from Warby Parker. Finally, I’d finish the look with a paste styler like TowelDry’s to create what I like to call my "Asian pompadour.” For a long day at the beach I need a firm hold and lots of height when it comes to my hair.

After grabbing some Taylor pork, egg, and cheese sandwiches (very “Jersey”) from the corner deli by my apartment, my friends and I would drive out to our friend’s shore house in Long Beach Island. We'd lay out on the sand listening to music (my favorite beach tunes lately are Poolside and Real Estate). Then work up an appetite by throwing around the Frisbee for a while and swimming in the ocean. For lunch it’s got to be Beach Haven Fishery for lobster rolls’—what else! We'd spent the rest of the day riding bikes down the island to the bay where we'd catch the sunset. And of course, no trip to LBI is complete without a trip to The Sea Shell for some drinks and dancing. My perfect summer Friday night would then end back at the beach house sipping some whiskey sours in the hot tub.
