The BB Man Agenda: February 2013

Our February Birchbox Man shipments are out the door, but the fun doesn’t stop with the box. We’ve round up the best things to read, watch, and learn this month. Follow this month’s agenda and you’re sure to survive February in style.

Watch

For an awesomely bad tutorial in survival skills, see Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins square off in “The Edge”. On the more stylish front, the Clint Eastwood classic, “Escape from Alcatraz” is newly streaming on Netflix. From pea coats and chambrays, leave it to Eastwood to keep his sartorial game up even in an island prison.

Read

Best known for gripping novels like For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway was also able to capture the same level of intensity in just a few pages. Get through those blistery winter nights with some of Papa’s lesser-known works in The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway. Want a survival classic? We recommend Alfred Lansing’s account of Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition and his year-long survival on the Antarctic seas.

Listen

“Survivor” the band has three out of 11 tracks on the The Rocky IV soundtrack, which is always a winner for winter workouts. For mellower times, the reissue of “Live In Europe 1969 The Bootleg Series Vol. 2” from Miles Davis is good for homemade cocktails and some good armchair time. And finally, the dreaded "sophomore slump" has wreaked havoc on countless bands, but Local Natives is not one of them. Their recent release, Hummingbird, features an even deeper, more focused version of the harmonious indie rock that made their debut such a hit.

Download

Find the North Star (and a whole lot more) through Star Walk. The app gives you a 360-degree star map of “constellations, stars, planets, satellites, and galaxies currently overhead from anywhere on Earth.” Here on Earth, Valetmag.com’s app gives you style advice on the go, a “Personal Dossier,” and size converter to help you figure out your measurements and save them so you'll always know what size to look for.

Learn

To build your own compass in a pinch. All you need is a sewing needle, a refrigerator magnet, a bowl of water, and a small piece of paper. The Federal Aviation Administration has probably the simplest and best tutorial out there. For surviving the board room, you’ll want to know how to tie a perfectly symmetrical tie knot…reverse side out. Here’s how to master The Pratt knot.

Remember

Valentine’s day is right around the corner. Before you pick up the phone and book and overpriced prix-fixe meal, try your hand at a homemade dinner. It’s the way to go, we promise. You can’t go wrong with roast chicken (try Thomas Keller’s foolproof recipes, a winter greens salad, and the most decadent chocolate dessert money can buy. Here’s another tip: instead of (over) paying for flowers for a single day, you could be a fresh flower replenishing hero on the regular with a single click.
