The Things He Carries: John Cafarelli

We asked John Cafarelli, founder and president of ERNEST SUPPLIES, to unpack his tote. “When I first conceived the idea for ERNEST SUPPLIES, I was living and working between New York and Los Angeles,” he says. As a native New Yorker, my roots will always be here, but the weather, the beach, and the vibe of LA will occupy a special place in my heart.”

Name: John Cafarelli

Occupation: Founder and President of ERNEST SUPPLIES

What’s in my bag:

1. Leather Weekend Bag
“When a guy reaches a certain point in his life, it's essential to invest in a great weekend bag. This one was designed for me by a friend and is the perfect size to pack in an airplane overhead compartment. My favorite thing about this bag is that the leather has absorbed some of the stresses of travel and taken on a truly unique look and feel.”

2. Levi’s Blue Wool Blazer
“A blue blazer is one of the most versatile pieces in a guy's wardrobe. I wear this heavier wool blazer in cooler months because I can pair it up with a vest to wear it outdoors or drop the vest and look sharp at dinner or a meeting.”

3. Vintage Polaroid SX-70 with Film
“There's really nothing that compares to the look and feel of a Polaroid picture, and the camera itself is a thing of beauty.”

4. iPhone Charging Cable
“I've set up Ernest Supplies such that I can run much of the business from my iPhone. As a result, I have to charge my phone constantly to avoid a dead battery.”

5. Skullcandy Earbuds
“My earbuds are virtually permanent fixtures in my ears when I travel. I've made a playlist with all of my favorite music of the moment every month since 2005 and I use the music to drown out the sound of what's going on around me.”

6. iPad and a Stack of Magazines
“If I'm not working (or sleeping) on the plane, I like to keep myself entertained by flipping through a few of my favorite mags and catching up on TV shows on my iPad.”

7. Levi’s Jeans
“Dark blue denim is a perfect travel companion because of its versatility.”

8. Apple MacBook Pro
“I'm actually not a lifelong Apple devotee, but I’ve converted since launching Ernest Supplies. I keep it safe in this cool leather and canvas carry case by Herschel Supply.”

9. Persol Sunglasses
“A cool pair of shades is essential for life in sunny California.”

10. Sewing Kit
“One never knows when they'll be called upon to stitch a button back onto a shirt, so I carry a mini sewing kit. Fingers crossed, I've yet to use it.”

11. Cedar Sachet by Juniper Ridge
“I throw this bad boy filled with Siskiyou cedar clippings into my bag to keep my clothes smelling fresh. Since I don't check a bag, I don't travel with cologne (mine doesn't come in a travel size), so the natural scent it imparts onto my clothes comes in handy.”

12. iPhone and Business Cards
“Whether I'm in my office in SoHo or stuck in traffic on the 405, my iPhone keeps me connected to all that's going on. I keep it safe and looking cool in this handmade leather carrying case by Pad & Quill.”

13. Monogrammed Shirt Hanger
“I wear a lot of button-up shirts, which have a tendency to get very wrinkled while traveling. A trick my dad taught me is to carefully roll them up in a smaller travel bag. I actually ‘borrowed’ this one from my dad 15 or so years ago. Luckily, we share the same initials.”

14. Monarch Playing Cards
“For whatever reason, I always keep a deck of cards in my bag - you never know when an impromptu game of gin rummy will be in order.”

15. ERNEST SUPPLIES Roll Up Tool Kit
“I designed Ernest Supplies to fit seamlessly into the lives of guys like me, who often find themselves on the go. The roll up tool kit is a perfect, comprehensive travel companion that covers all the bases—face wash, moisturizer and shave—in carry-on friendly pouch packaging.”

16. An Apple
“I always try to tuck a travel-friendly, healthy snack like an apple into my bag to keep me going when healthy choices aren't plentiful—like at 35,000 feet.”
