Travel expert Brandon Presser has traversed the world and authored more than 40 guidebooks for Lonely Planet. In other words, he knows a thing or two about planning a successful trip. We caught up with the globe-trotting guru—just back from Thailand and already plotting his next voyage—to find out his top tips, from tapping into social media to always wearing the right shoes.

We also asked Brandon for his go-to travel outfit. Here are his picks:

The Shoes

“Having all-purpose shoes is an important pillar of packing and travel. I recommend OTZ. They are a great light-weight shoe (300 grams) that practically pack up into nothing in your bag. This is the only shoe I brought to Korea and it got me through everything—market ogling, temple stays, business lunches, you name it.

The Base Layer

I always wear a merino base layer as my top—excellent breathable material that won't make you feel like you've acquired that airplane "ick" after a long flight. It's great for the temperature on a plane too. I like Fjallraven and 66North.

The Jacket

If you're flying business (or hoping to get an upgrade), it's important to look a little dapper. I always bring an all-purpose type of coat on my trips (especially if there's a chance of rain) and this lightweight and easily packable coat from Nau always checks the "fancy" box. It’s a great thing to carry on especially if you're dashing off to a meeting right from the airport.
