5 Tips For Taking a Great Mani ‘Gram

As demonstrated by the daisy chain otherwise known as Zooey Deschanel’s nails at this year's Golden Globes, nail art is here to stay. Also in it for the long haul is Instagram, which is the perfect place to show off your newly decorated digits. If you're like me and just can't get enough of sassy manicures and social media, here are a few rules to follow before sharing your fancy fingers with the world.

Clean Cuticles

Even if you’ve selected the perfect filter, there's nothing more distracting than untidy cuticles. To avoid ruining a potentially awesome mani 'gram, use Tweezerman's Cuticle Pusher and Nail Cleaner to get them ready for their close-up.

Moisturize

After making sure cuticles are in tip-top shape, hydrate your hands with J.R. Watkins' Hand & Cuticle Salve. Pro tip: As Mollie Chen adorably demonstrates here, seal in moisture while you sleep by covering your hands with gloves or socks after application.

Accessorize

Now that your hands are silky smooth and ready to go, it's time to style your snap. As seen above, I like to place bold rings above my knuckles to add some flair. Choose a complementary background for your hand, or better yet, match your clothing to your color!

Hold Props

As seen here, sometimes I like to hold the nail polish bottles that were used to give viewers an instant look at the tools they'll need to replicate the look. It can be a challenge to wear bold rings while holding the bottles, so I recommend choosing one or the other.

Give Props

Last but not least, always give credit where credit is due. There are tons of incredible nail artists out there who put in serious hours to perfect their craft, so show them love whenever possible. My plaid mani above was designed up by nail artist to the stars, Lynette Cenée. To witness more of Lynette's rad creations, follow her on Instagram and YouTube, or visit her at my favorite nail salon here in LA, Olive & June.

Happy 'gramming!
