6 Questions for: Designer Rebecca Taylor

New Zealand native Rebecca Taylor moved to New York with less than $1000 in her bank account but immediately set to work conquering the fashion world. (Spoiler: She succeeded.) Since launching her eponymous brand in the 90s, she’s extended beyond ready-to-wear to include handbags, shoes, jewelry, eyewear, swimwear—and let’s not forget her children’s label. We count ourselves among her many fans, in large part because season after season, she turns out feminine, flattering pieces that just, well, make us feel good. We were thrilled to talk to the trendsetter about her makeup faves, her style icon, and her ultimate holiday party outfit.

What’s in your makeup bag?

One of my latest favorite products is the RMS Lip2Cheek. I love it. It’s 100% organic and good for you. And I love the Dior Show Mascara, which is my absolute all-time can’t-be-without black mascara. I also feel like you should use something with SPF every day. I use Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer.

What would you be if you weren’t a designer?

I am a bit of a makeup junkie. I would be a makeup artist or I would be in beauty PR because you get lots of stuff! I am always talking to everybody at the office about what products they should be using.

If you could get personal fashion advice from one person, living or dead, who would it be?

I’m just such a big Coco Chanel fan. For me, she has defined style and beauty ever since I can remember. We would go to Hawaii when I was a pre-teen, and I would go to the Chanel store there, because we don’t have designer stores in New Zealand, and just buy lipstick and get the bag with the white flower on it. Chanel is timeless, feminine, and it’s sexy—all those things wrapped up in a package. And you know, it just is style.

What’s your favorite part about the holidays?

I go home to New Zealand every Christmas, which is the highlight of my holidays. My favorite part has to be the night before Christmas at my mom and dad’s house where I grew up and taking my children back there. My dad reads to them on the couch and then we put a sign out on the street, “Santa This Way.” It’s really cute, really special.

What’s your signature holiday beauty look?

At the moment, I am really into a great red lip. But I think it has to be matte, almost transparent, and not dry your lip out, which is hard (to achieve). And for the rest of your face, you should go for flawless skin, almost like you don’t have makeup on. Maybe mascara, curled eyelashes, and groomed eyebrows—and that’s it.

Any suggestions for a great holiday party outfit?

I’m a big fan of men’s tuxedo pants with a silk T-shirt, sort of tomboy but balance it with very feminine nails and lips. I love that. But with a spikey heel though. You must have a supersexy heel.
