Birchbox Crush: Melissa Coker

What’s not to love about a fashion world veteran who strives for imperfection? After years in the New York fashion scene, Melissa Coker moved to Los Angeles to start her own clothing line. Launched in 2007, Wren is all about pieces that are feminine, but not girlish, and edgy, but not harsh — not unlike the designer herself. We love Coker’s thoughtful approach to style (after all, she did name Wren after a Charles Dickens character) and her mussy chic style. Here’s how she gets her look.

“Red lipstick is a sure trick to make you look great in a photo. There is nothing better! It brightens the face and shaves five years off, easy.”

What’s your style?

What beauty products do you experiment with most?

Red lipstick is a sure trick to make you look great in a photo. There is nothing better! It brightens the face and shaves five years off, easy. I always have Clarins Joli Rouge in my purse. Blush may as well be renamed "youth dew" if you ask me — I use bareMinerals blush in Flowers.

Skincare routine

I'm pretty low maintenance. I use Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash in the morning, followed by sunscreen (lots of it). At night, I cleanse with the Clarisonic skin brush and follow up with Professional Solutions 100% pure hyaluronic acid and Novaurora Organic Rejuvenating Face Cream.

Sun strategy

I'm a sun-phobe so I'm very into my hat and sunscreen combo. I love La-Roche Posay Anthelios, but it must be imported from France (the US version isn't nearly as good, or as strong and it has bad for you chemicals that the European one does not have).

Latest beauty discoveries

I've been investigating all-natural and organic products and I love to shop at Wholefoods because they have one of the best selections. They even have their own set of requirements for the products they sell. Revolutionary! Some great brands: John Masters Organics, Evan Healy, Intelligent Nutrients, and California Babies
