From Farm to Vanity Table

With the farm-to-table movement at a fever pitch—even mainstream food companies like Chipotle are getting on board—we started to wonder where some of our favorite beauty formulas are sourced from too. (Exactly where are the cucumbers in Coola’s SPF grown?!) We trace the origins of five plant-powered products, as well as what makes them so potent.

jurlique

Product: Jurlique Essence Of Rose Roll-On Fragrance Oil

Farm-sourced star ingredient: Organic rosa gallica, aka Gallic rose
Hails from: This striking deep-pink rose is grown and harvested on Jurlique’s organic farm in South Australia.
Claims to fame: Aside from its inimitable scent, this rose has calming and restorative properties, and is gentle enough for all skin types—making it perfect for a roll-on fragrance. Fun fact: To safeguard their precious roses, Jurlique plants garlic bulbs, a natural pesticide, next to the flowers. Buffy the Vampire Slayer would approve.

Coola

Product: COOLA SPF 30 Matte Finish Cucumber for Face

Farm-sourced star ingredient: Organic cucumber
Hails from: The cukes are born and raised on an organic farm. COOLA isolates the nutrient-rich cucumber extract using USDA Certified Organic methods.
Claims to fame: Teeming with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, cucumber helps soothe irritation and strengthen the skin’s natural acid mantle, a defense against bacteria that can cause breakouts, rashes, and other pesky conditions.
Fun fact: COOLA isolates the cucumber extract through cold-processing methods, avoiding the heat-based techniques that can break down the cukes’ key nutrients.

phenome

Product: Phenomé 24-HOUR moisturizing system

Farm-sourced star ingredient: Ecological plant water, the nutrient-packed fluid that circulates through plants.
Hails from: The plant waters in this day-and-night moisturizer are derived from aloe vera leaves and rose petals.
Claims to fame: Plant water is biocompatible with human skin cells, allowing for maximum absorption of its nutrients including essential oils, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. When your skin encounters plant water, it thinks, “Drink up!”
Fun fact: It’s a tricky thing to coax water from a plant. The rose petals in this formula are plucked from buds before they blossom, when they contain peak levels of essential oils. Next, the petals are steamed to produce the flower water without compromising any of its essential nutrients.

nyakio

Product: Nyakio Kenyan Coffee Body Scrub

Farm-sourced star ingredient: Kenyan coffee
Hails from: The beans in this scrub come from—you guessed it—coffee farms in Kenya. After they’re harvested, the beans are ground and dried to achieve their signature gritty texture.
Claims to fame: Like the java we drink, Nyakio’s coffee is rich in antioxidants and natural caffeine. When mixed with sugar and plant oils, the ground beans exfoliate dull skin cells for smooth, glowing results.
Fun fact: This scrub is based on a time-honored family recipe. The brand’s founder, Nyakio Kamoche Grieco, first learned to use beans in skincare from her grandmother, who lived on a Kenyan coffee farm.

derma e

Product: derma e® Hydrating Night Crème with Hyaluronic Acid

Farm-sourced star ingredient: Organic aloe vera
Hails from: Harvested by hand from farms in Mexico, the aloe leaves are filleted (aka sliced) to extract aloe vera gel, which serves as the base for this soothing night cream.
Claims to fame: Nicknamed “the plant of immortality,” aloe has been used in skin-healing ointments for millennia. Compatible with your skin’s pH, the gel deeply penetrates to moisturize, soothe, protect, and deliver a host of antiaging vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Fun fact: When you’re working with aloe, time is of the essence: The gel is carefully extracted from the plant’s leaves no more than two hours after they’re picked.
