Countdown to the 2014 Oscars: Our Predictions

It’s without hyperbole that we say 2013 was a banner year for the movies. With daring, original films like 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, and The Wolf of Wall Street, Hollywood proved that it could use its big budgets for more than just comic book adaptations. Likewise, smaller movies beefed up by dynamite performances—Dallas Buyers Club, we’re looking at you—gave the big boys a run for their money. As we anxiously await the history-making envelopes, here are some of the fun things we’re looking forward to at this Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Ellen’s Moves

Any casual viewer of the Ellen show knows the lady loves to bust a move. In fact, she started the dance party early with her choreographed Oscars promo featuring a poppy jam from Fitz & the Tantrums. (Psst: Read our interview with Tantrum’s singer Noelle Scaggs here!) We can’t wait for her opening monologue (err, dance-o-loge?).

Jared Leto’s Hair

Up? Down? Man bun? Top knot? You never know what the ombre-coiffed star will pull out for his Academy Awards look. One thing we can bank on? His coquettish red carpet banter. Seriously, this guy loves to flirt.

Amy Adams’ Deep V

You could say that Amy Adams’ plunging necklines were just another character in American Hustle’s stellar ensemble cast. And after her turn in red Valentino at the Golden Globes, we have a (hopeful) feeling she’ll reprise her Studio 54-appropriate frock for the Academy Awards.

Brad Pitt Will Win His First Oscar...But As a Producer

Last year, Pitt’s pal George Clooney won the top prize for producing Best Picture Winner Argo, and this year, he is a likely winner for producing 12 Years a Slave. His main competition is the Clooney-driven Gravity—though the star-studded American Hustle has gathered steam late in the season.

Lupita Nyong’o Will Kill It

And we don’t mean just on the red carpet. This rising star has our vote for the Best Supporting Actress category for her brave, breakout performance in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave.

Leo and [Insert Model of the Moment Here]?

The only thing harder to predict than this year’s Best Actor winner is whom Leo (ever the nominee, not yet the winner) will bring as his date to the awards. Our money is on swimsuit model Nina Agdal, who was spotted leaving a club with the actor just last month.

Matthew McConaughey Will Out-Cool Us All

It’s safe to say we’re currently witnessing the “Renaissance of Matthew McConaughey,” who has proven himself to be a massive onscreen talent, inhabiting complex characters light years beyond the flimsy bros he portrayed in rom-coms like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Not only that, he’s made a name for his do-gooder organization, Just Keep Livin Foundation. Oh how we love his Southern-boy swagger.
