From Dinner to Dancing: Take Your New Year’s Eve Look from Day to Night

You've logged quality time with the family, devoured mountains of cookies, and unwrapped all your new goodies. Now it's time to let the real celebration begin! There's no better way to ring in 2014 than with a traffic-stopping makeup look. For those of you with hectic party schedules, here’s a breezy way to upgrade your makeup from an elegant evening affair to a rowdy dance floor. No matter what your plans are this New Year's Eve, we hope you take the opportunity to shine!

Now, the fun stuff: Birchbox staffer Kayla’s spot-on day and night makeup. For a cozy dinner or house party, try the low key (yet festive) option seen on the left. Keep oil slicks at bay by pairing a mattifying moisturizer, like dr. brandt®’s pores no more® anti-aging mattifying lotion, with a top-notch primer, like Pür Minerals Color Correcting Primer. Now that you’ve got a smooth canvas, start layering on the color. We used Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer and Dermablend™’s Professional Loose Setting Powder to even out Kayla’s skin tone and mask imperfections. To play up her cheekbones, we added a touch of Benefit Box O' Powder in BellaBomba to her cheeks and Benefit’s HighBeam to the high points of her face.To create her megawatt eyes, we gave Kayla a simple cat eye and several coats of mascara. For both, we turned to Secret Agent Beauty’s Double-Agent Eyes (2-in-1 Mascara & Liner). To instantly up the ante for a more jubilant occasion, we added a swipe of bold red lipstick and an extra dash of liner to her waterline. Lastly, we lightly worked ybf beauty Automatic Universal Taupe Eyebrow Pencil into her brows to draw more attention to her eyes.

Hair

For both day and night looks, Kayla kept her signature, simple, chic loose waves. To score this sweet ‘do, this curly-haired Birchboxer washed her hair with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Next, she used a blow dryer with a curl-diffusing attachment to coax her tight ringlets into loose waves. After drying her hair, she used a small barrel curling iron to reinforce the curly tendrils. Finally, she worked a tiny drop of smoothing hair oil through the ends of her hair and misted her entire mane with a nourishing hair spray.

Finishing Touches

To instantly up the glamour factor, try throwing on a statement necklace. Et voilà! Scoot your fabulous self out the door and party like it's 1999. P.S.: You’ll be more apt to keep your makeup goods handy if you tote them around in a bananas-cute (and, dare we say, slightly sassy) cosmetics bag, like this one from Folli Follie.
