How To: Get Spring 2012’s Sleek Hair Look

Slicked back, wet locks dominated Spring 2012 runways, showing up everywhere from Donna Karan to Derek Lam. Even though the runway version is a bit intimidating (hello Blade Runner!), you can adapt it to create a simple, sassy ‘do that’s perfect for night. L'Oréal Professionnel master stylist Joseph Dimaggio, who has worked on the looks for Calvin Klein, Jason Wu and Vera Wang, told us how to recreate the sleek style.

Begin with Hair Half-Wet

Start with hair that is 60 percent damp, which will need less product to create that ‘wet’ style. It will hold the product better for a flattened, clean final look.

Work Gel into Hair

Gel sounds aggressive, we know. But, “for a sleek look, you need sleek products,” says Dimaggio. “You need something with shine and that looks wet.” Starting at the nape of your neck, take small, one-inch sections of hair and comb gel into each segment. (One of our favorites is L’Oréal Professionnel’s Texture Expert Or Graphic). Gradually move up the back of your head in sections, working gel into each inch-sized segment, finishing when you’ve reach the hairline above your forehead.

Apply Hair Oil

Choose a light serum like L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil and use hands to rub the elixir into hair, starting from the hairline and finishing at the nape of the neck. This extra bit of product “gives extra shine and sleekness to polish off the look,” says Dimaggio.

Comb it Back

For an extra-refined look, use a fine-toothed comb to ensure minimal separation. To get larger sections, pick the wide-toothed comb, and for a messy sleek look, simply use your fingers, pulling them from the forehead towards the nape of the neck.

Finish with Hair Spray or Freezing Mist

To make sure the style really sets, spritz a hair spray over the entire look. Et, voila! A simple, sleek hair look all your own.
