How To: Primp Like a Star

Whenever awards season rolls around, we marvel at how A-list celebrities turn out with luminous skin, sculpted bodies, and gleaming hair. Of course, they do have the benefit of armies of experts who oversee every element of their appearance. But we’ve done some research and found a self-improvement regimen that any mortal can undertake. Read on and you can look red-carpet fabulous in time for any big event, whether it’s your best friend’s wedding or an interview for your dream job.

4-6 Weeks Before

Celeb Way: Hire a personal trainer who makes house calls. Joey Hudson, a Los Angeles celebrity trainer, targets his clients’ arms if they’re planning to wear a sleeveless gown. He also helps them embark on a ruthless diet: they “taper off on carbs and avoid foods that can cause water retention, like dairy.”

Our Way: Create your own whole-body circuit training (Hollywood’s favored calorie-burner) workout by alternating squats, traveling lunges, and step-ups on a bench. Or try this simple 15-minute at-home workout from Women’s Health. As for your diet, fill up on lean proteins and healthy veggies before reaching for the carbs—save them for last, and you’ll find yourself eating less of them.

2 Weeks Before

Celeb Way: Schedule in some pro antiaging treatments. “Fillers under the eyes, cheeks, and jawline are very popular,” says Dr. Howard Sobel, a cosmetic dermatologist. Ditto for strategic Botox in problem areas like brow furrows.

Our Way: Turn to a serum made with hyaluronic acid, the same skin-plumping ingredient found in fillers like Juvederm. One option we love: BORGHESE Curaforte Moisture Intensifier. Layer it under a nourishing face oil like Olie Biologique’s Huile Radicale.

1 Week Before

Celeb Way: Sit down for a carefully premeditated haircut. Julia Papworth, a hair and makeup stylist for stars like Julia Stiles and Kendra Wilkinson, adds that celebrities will also get a facial and a peel a week out from an event. “Any closer to the big day and you risk redness and peeling,” she says.

Our Way: No need to spring for an expensive haircut to revive tired strands. Instead, apply a deep-conditioning oil like Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime onto damp hair. “Put on a shower cap, and let it work its magic for 10 to 15 minutes,” Papworth suggests. In the meantime, give your complexion the spa treatment with WEI’s Pomegranate Buffing Beads and Golden Root Purifying Mud Mask.

1-3 Days Before

Celeb Way: Book a body wrap. “A wrap can help to de-puff and draw out toxins, making you look more svelte,” Papworth explains. Now is also the time for a spray tan. Tanning technicians travel to stars’ homes and apply custom-blended colors for a convincing glow.

Our Way: Try dry brushing in the morning to boost circulation, and slather on a collagen-boosting cream like Mama Mio Skincare’s Boob Tube to tighten the skin on your décolletage. Get bronzed with self-tanning wipes that adjust to your skin tone.

The Big Day

Celeb Way: Wake up at 5 a.m., when your hair stylist and makeup artist are set to arrive. Spend the rest of the day in a chair before hopping in a stretch limo. Do not even think about eating.

Our Way: Apply a moisturizing tint like Dr. Jart’s Black Label BB Cream. Next, prep lids with a primer such as theBalm’s Put a Lid on It, followed by a neutral matte shadow, cat-eye liner, and a classic red lip. “A bright lip color makes teeth look white, a bonus when you’re smiling for the camera,” Papworth says. As for hair, you can’t go wrong with a high bun.
