Birchbox Crush: Jodie and Danielle Snyder

Sisterly love is never so apparent as when you’re in a room with Danielle and Jodie Synder, the powerhouse duo behind the fashion-jewelry label, Dannijo. Though the two have distinctly different personalities, they know each well enough to finish the other’s sentences—and to clarify, it is completely endearing. Clearly destined to collaborate, the siblings have skyrocketed to the top of the fashion world in just a few years. In 2007, both girls were living and working in New York City when they decided to create a small capsule collection for a fundraising initiative called LWALA that Danielle had helped to co-found. Not only were the pieces well received, they even got an endorsement from the foundation’s spokesperson, Natalie Portman. Fortuitously enough, both Jodie and Danielle were shortly thereafter fired from their fashion-industry jobs, which inspired them to launch Dannijo out of their East Village apartment. Their first big break came when Bergdorf Goodman picked them up, providing them with the perfect high-end launching pad. The rest, as they say, is history and you can now spot their designs everywhere from Gossip Girl to Beyonce. We were lucky enough to snag the pair for a moment to talk style, startups, and, of course, beauty.

Working Together

Danielle: It’s sort of the best possible working scenario because you can finish each other’s sentences, you know the way that each other thinks, and you understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses. You can play off each other, and a lot of business partnerships don’t have that.

Jodie: I’ve worked in other business relationships, and it’s really hard to address certain things and you dance around certain issues. When it’s your family and you know somebody so well, nothing is an issue, you just deal with it and move on.

Daily Routine

Jodie: Both of us like a really natural, quick daily regimen. We’re always on the go, so we never have that much time to get ready. But I’m really into a few products. I’m obsessed with the Giorgio Armani Face Fabric Radiance Foundation. It’s like a foundation cream, but it’s really, really light. It feels silky.

Danielle: I learned everything about makeup from Jodie. I just copy every product that she buys. The best mascara ever is nine dollars: Maybelline’s The Falsies. We used to get all these nice mascaras, but this is better than them all.

Favorite Product

Jodie: I feel like buying expensive hand soap is so stupid, but I love Molton Brown Blue Marquis scent. We have it in the bathroom in our work studio, and in my house. I just can’t get enough of it.

Danielle: I use Oscar Blandi’s Dry Shampoo every day. I feel like my hair is flat and it gives my hair a little bit of volume.

New Finds

Jodie: I just switched my perfume, which I like to do that every few years. I’m obsessed with the Creed Acqua Fiorentina. Actually, Creed I’m obsessed with in general, and my boyfriend wears the cologne, which could be my favorite smell ever. When we travel, I hate taking perfume bottles, so I just wear his cologne.

Danielle: My friend Cass gave me my favorite new product for the holidays: the fresh Brown Sugar body scrub. I’m obsessed with it. It makes you so much softer.

Makeup Style

Danielle: I waver between two. For night, I like red lipstick, a cat eye, and a sun-kissed face; a very Old Hollywood glamour look. For daytime, I go sort of au natural. A light gloss, rosy cheeks, and mascara.

Jodie: I would describe mine more as beachy. I always feel the best when I get off the beach and have a tan face. All you need is red lipstick, mascara, and you’re fine.
