Liz Lange: Beauty in Action

It’s hard to imagine now, in a world filled with weekly rags chronicling every pregnant celebrity, that maternity wear used to be more like oversized children’s clothing. In 1997, after noticing that her pregnant friends avoided maternity clothes altogether and instead tailored their regular clothes, then-Vogue editor Liz Lange launched Liz Lange Maternity. She used stretch fabric, a novelty at the time, to create trendy clothing that accommodated pregnant bellies. Since then, Lange got licensing deals with Nike and Target, wrote a maternity style guidebook, and eventually sold her company in 2007. She remains the face of Liz Lange Maternity and has launched her first non-maternity clothing collection, Completely Me by Liz Lange on HSN, and co-founded a shopping site, Shopafrolic.com with her sister. We got her best tips.

Everyday Glamour

I find that the older I get, the more I do. I’m a busy working mom so I don’t have a lot of time in the mornings to get ready but I still like to look a little glamorous everyday. I never know what the day will bring—I could have meetings, a television segment, or go straight out after work—so I like to be prepared for anything.

Morning Routine

In the mornings I’ll typically use a light moisturizer like La Roche Posay Toleriane Facial Fluid and I may mix in a bronzer like Laura Mercier Bronzing Gel or dab on Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel with a small, moistened sponge, which takes two seconds. Next, I’ll line my upper lashes with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil and use a natural lip color like Clinique’s Chubby Pencil in Whole Lotta Honey.

Time-Saving Techniques

I used to love to sit in the sun but now I get a spray tan about once a week. If I’m not able to do that, I’ll use St. Tropez or Model Co. self tanner, which I love. I’ve also just recently started getting eyelash extensions at Trish McEvoy Studio, which means I save time skipping mascara.

Clear Out the Clutter

I always feel that my beauty routine goes best when I edit. I only keep the five items I’m using everyday on my vanity to avoid clutter.

Like Mother Like Daughter

My mother is very natural and doesn’t use a lot of products. She has excellent skin, which I feel lucky to have inherited, and I’ve always felt the key to that is “less is more” when it comes to products. Sometimes letting your face breathe can be better than using lots of products on it. I like makeup a lot more than my own mother so I’ll probably pass on to my daughter that it doesn’t take too much to look your best everyday but it’s important. It goes way beyond being superficial and is more about when you look good, you feel good.
