They say you never know someone until you walk a mile in her shoes—but what about spending a day in her makeup? Birchbox staffers Deepica Mutyala and Kate Urquhart couldn’t be further apart on the cosmetics spectrum: Deepica lives for contouring, bold brows, and a lip color that pops, while Kate sticks to a natural, barely-there regimen. We couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if these two opposites traded looks for a day. With the help of our resident makeup artist, Nathaniel Yordan, Deepica and Kate adopted each other’s routines. Here’s what happened:
Deepica goes minimal
Deepica’s regular routine
On an average day our Brand Campaign Strategy Senior Manager applies no less than 10 products, beginning with MAKE’s Skin Illuminator and Marcelle’s Bronzing Pressed Powder to highlight and contour, applying her go-to Cynthia Rowley Beauty Liquid Liner, and ending with a bright swipe of LAQA & Co.’s Fat Lip Pencil. “People can be scared to explore bold [colors],” she says, “but if you’re confident, everyone else will think you are too.”
Making the switch
Nathaniel prepped Deepica’s skin with a light layer of Kate’s go-to, Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer and highlighted her cheeks with theBalm’s How Bout Them Apples in Caramel. He skipped over her signature liner and instead brushed stila’s smudge pot gray along her lash line. After applying a coat of Benefit’s They’re Real! Mascara, he gave her lips a low-key shimmer by layering Manna Kadar Cosmetics Lipstick in Shrimp and Lip Gloss in Embrace.
Kate Goes Glam
Kate’s regular routine
“If I’m lucky, I get 20 minutes in the morning,” says Kate, the mother of a 1-year-old daughter. During the week, Kate sticks to a palette of neutrals by using Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer and pressed powder, a little blush, and Jouer Tinted Lip Enhancer.
Making the switch
Nathaniel began by contouring Kate’s face with two Bobbi Brown foundations, drawing lines just below her cheekbones with a darker shade and highlighting her cheekbones, the bridge of her nose and brow bones before blending it all together. Then he gave her cheeks a natural-looking flush, courtesy of Vasanti’s Lip and Cheek Color Pod in Candlelight. Next, he lined her eyes with Mally Beauty Evercolor Starlight Watercolor Eye Liner in Sailor, a deep blue, and made them shimmer with stila’s eye shadow pans in compact in Kitten. To recreate Deepica’s dramatic brows, he filled in Kate’s arches with Anastasia’s Beverly Hills’ Brow Wiz, then highlighted and defined them with the Brow Duality pencil. The final touch: An electric swipe of (Deepica’s fave) LAQA & Co.’s Fat Lip Pencil in Lampchop.
Though they admitted to feeling out of their (makeup) element at first, each woman found something new to like about their borrowed look. “I think everyone should get out of their comfort zones once in a while,” says Deepica. While she wouldn’t wave a permanent goodbye to her beloved eyeliner, she was surprised by how comfortable she felt with just a sheer tinted moisturizer. And Kate confessed she wanted to start wearing a bright lip more often. Two ladies who learned from swapping their drastically different approaches to makeup? That’s what we call a Birchbox happy ending.
