Rachel Sklar: Beauty in Action

Rachel Sklar’s makeup philosophy is simple: whatever can be achieved in the time it takes for a cab to get from point A to point B. As the editor at large for Mediaite, a contributor to the Daily Beast, co-founder of Change the Ratio and Charitini, and advisor to some red hot startups, this Media Queen does it all — and yes, she looks good while she does it. Sklar is the master of juggling work, play, and more work. We chatted with her about the rise of women in technology, her in-transit beauty routine, and why being low-maintenance is a great thing.

I’ve never been much of a makeup person; I sort of got away with the minimum and then hit my late 30s and realized I should probably learn it.

Change The Ratio is a passion project I started with Emily Gannett — it's a side project, we both do other things, and there’s no money involved. It has three simple goals: increase visibility, access, and opportunity for women in tech. We started CTR just over a year ago, and the change since then has been so distinct and amazing.

Looks and the Workplace

Let's face it, women are judged by how they present themselves. As any woman knows, a lot goes into decisions about what to wear and how to style yourself (how much makeup to wear? Can you get away with frizzy summer hair? Should I pack sunscreen/coverup/lipgloss/blush/bronzer?) If those concerns can be dispensed easily with products, it frees you to focus on other things. If you look good, you feel good.

Women and Tech

Seeing women-led companies recognizing a need in the market with great products is amazing. Birchbox is clearly in that category - and was really a godsend for me. Historically, I’ve never been much of a makeup person; I sort of got away with the minimum and then hit my late 30s and realized I should probably learn it.

Daily Musts

Birchbox sent me a starter box with items that became staples: I use the Laura Mercier Lip Glacé all the time, and also the NARS Multiple in South Beach. All my life I’ve used Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion by Clinique — it’s the best for blending — and I also love Olay Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum and Neutrogena Ageless Essentials Continuous Hydrating Thick Eye Cream. My under eyes are my problem areas and both those products are great.

Two-Minute Trick

I hate sitting still so I rarely get manicures and pedicures (or haircuts - I'm months overdue!). However, I do swear by a little cucumber slice under my eyes. They have to be sliced really thin though, so you can still do things. You just slap the thin slice of cucumber under your eye, and it will stick — you can do it in the office or even in a cab. It’s the least I can do, because getting a good night’s sleep is clearly not in the cards for me.

Beat the Frizz

I have a big giant mane that expands - I use Neutrogena Triple Moisture Shampoo and Leave-in Conditioner. Regular moisturizer is also a great de-frizzer. I just run a thin layer on my hands and run it through my hair. I’ve been doing that for years.
