Test Drive: Hair Feathers

We’ll admit, we were skeptical at first. Feather hair extensions, as evidenced by fashion train wreck Ke$ha, can go terribly wrong. But after seeing stylish stars like Hilary Duff and Jennifer Love Hewitt rock them—and look majorly cute doing so—we had to try it for ourselves. There are plenty of feathery offerings out there, but the go-to line for fashionistas and celebs is Fine Featherheads, a Colorado-based company. We asked Dakota Hills, the company’s CEO and founder, if she could spare some of her pretty plumes for us to test drive. She sweetly sent along a couple Featherheads, the name for a single extension that is made up of seven feathers, as well as a special tool kit for installation. As soon as the feathers arrived, our office erupted with excitement, and after watching her helpful video tutorial, we gave it a go. (If you’re wondering, they simply get clamped to a piece of your own hair with a special micro link — no clips necessary!) With our newly feathered hairstyles, we are complete converts. We talked to Hills to find out more about this developing trend.

What are feather hair extensions?

There are several different companies that make feather hair extensions, and all have different methods. Fine Featherheads’ extensions are rooster feathers that have been cleaned with a 100 percent biodegradable soap and dyed with an organic, mineral-based dye. It takes over two years to raise the birds to get feathers the long enough, and we really like long feathers!

What makes Fine Featherheads different?

We were the very first company to produce and distribute salon-quality feather hair extensions and we have a patent on our design. We work exclusively with the only farm in the entire world that produces feathers of this caliber. We’ve even been to meet the birds and seen the process. There are a couple of other sources out there, but the quality doesn’t even come close in comparison.

How long do they last and what are some options?

The extensions can last anywhere from one to four months, depending on the wearer. They work in all hair types and can easily be trimmed to suit any length. They can be brushed, blow-dried, straightened, and even curled. As far as variety, they come in a full spectrum of colors, from subtle and natural to playful and wild, and since they are from real birds, each feather is one of a kind.

Where can I get a feather hair extension?

Getting a feather hair extension is incredibly easy, painless, and only takes a couple minutes. You can try it yourself with our handy Fine Featherheads kit, or there are a variety of places across the country that you can get them installed. Fine Featherheads has a rapidly growing list of local providers; click here to find one in your area.
