The Aging Areas You’re Forgetting

We’ve had it drilled into our heads to slather SPF on our faces every day and dab eye cream onto crow’s feet at night. But other parts of the body are just as prone to the effects of gravity, sun, and time. To learn what we may have overlooked, we tapped Leslie Baumann, MD, cosmetic dermatologist and CEO of Baumann Cosmetic & Research Institute. Here are four key areas you may be neglecting—and how to tap the brakes on the aging process there.

Trouble zone: Neck and Cleavage

Why it ages you: The skin on your neck and chest loses collagen just like the skin on your face, according to Dr. Baumann. One part of your neck in particular presents a, er, wrinkle: The platysma muscle can shorten with age, drawing down the sides of your mouth into a permanent frown and causing the dreaded “turkey neck” look. Nora Ephron was not a fan.

Your best defense: Covering up with scarves and turtlenecks won’t protect you from the sun’s harmful rays, so apply sunscreen to your neck and chest daily. We love Coola’s SPF 30 for Body. At night, slather on something to help your skin bounce back from environmental stressors, like Dr. Hauschka Regenerating Neck and Décolleté Cream. Its blend of botanicals hydrates and firms skin, and is free of potentially irritating ingredients such as retinol.

Trouble zone: Hands

Why it ages you: Your hands lose two key skin plumpers over time, says Dr. Baumann: fat and hyaluronic acid. Over-washing can also dry out hands, giving them a rough appearance, and UV rays will cause brown spots as you get older.

Your best defense: Unfortunately, keeping your hands in your pockets at all times is not realistic. For daily sun protection, there’s Supergoop!® Forever Young Hand Cream with Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 40. To address the issue of thinning skin, reach for StriVectin-SD™ Volumizing Hand Treatment—the formula works wonders by filling out fine lines and banishing crepey texture with a patented nutrient complex.

Trouble zone: Lips

Why it ages you: Unlike the skin on your face, your lips don’t have oil glands, which means they don’t produce the sebum that would protect them from dehydration and free radicals, explains Baumann. As a consequence, your pout is more prone to loss of collagen and hyaluronic acid, which causes wrinkles on and around your lips.

Your best defense: Baumann recommends a lip treatment that contains vitamin E, shea butter, or argan oil to restore lost moisture. We recommend StriVectin Clinical Corrector™ Anti-Aging Lip Tint SPF 20. Not only does the formula contain shea butter, but it triple-protects against solar rays–and the pretty pink color gives your pout a healthy tint.

Trouble zone: Hair

Why it ages you: News flash: Your hair gets thinner with age (mind = blown). But did you know that individual strands get weaker too? The diameter of each hair actually shrinks, says Baumann, which makes hair more prone to breakage.

Your best defense: Dr. Baumann suggests a vitamin supplement to nourish hair at the scalp level. Her pick: Viviscal, which has been proven to make hair grow in faster and thicker. Our tactic: fake it ‘til you make it with products that thicken strands. Try Kerastase Age Premium Masque Substantif, a treatment mask that repairs follicles and increases volume.
