I am not typically a red lipstick kind of girl. I’ve tried my fair share of fire engine shades over the years, but the hues always looked terrible with my skin tone and honestly, lipstick formulas just weren't my cup of tea. The first color I found that I truly loved was By Terry’s Frenetic Vermillion, since the coral-orange looked great with my complexion. But after wearing it on a night out, I realized that the downside of bold lip colors is that no only do they fade (argh!), they also leave a prominent stain. Once you apply, you really have to be committed to maintaining the color and reapplying frequently.
That’s why I seriously jumped for joy once I tried stila’s stay all day® liquid lipstick for a matte makeup video that we shot last year. While the name of the product says it all, I was skeptical of the formula—no lipstick really lasts all day. But after shooting the video in the morning, I went back to the office for a full day, and had dinner and drinks later that night. By the time I went home the color was still just as vibrant as it had been when I’d put it on. I was floored.
Flash forward one year and the liquid lipstick is still one of my all time favorites. I haven’t found another formula that I can put on and just forget about, and somehow I’ve lost my tube more than once to my friends’ makeup bags. The best part of this lipstick though, is that this month some of you will be receiving it as a sample in your August Birchbox!
Here are a few tips to know before you start swiping on the color (the liquid formula can be a little bit tricky). Once you get these down though, you’ll have a hard time not wearing this constantly:
1. This color goes a really long way, so start with less than you think you need.
2. Make sure to be as precise as possible when applying since the pigment seriously sticks once it’s touched your skin. Feel free to use a lip brush if you want to be extra careful.
3. The formula goes on like a thick gloss, but dries matte. So make sure to prep your lips first to prevent chapped lips and uneven application.
