Why Everyone—Yes, Everyone—Should Own an SPF Serum

As I get older (I just turned 30 this past summer!) it becomes increasingly important that I take proper care of my skin. Especially because I am so fair, a daily dose of sunscreen is critical to ward off the signs of aging. Since I’ve always been a bit of an SPF nut, I don’t just rely on the coverage in my tinted moisturizer—instead I religiously slather on Supergoop!® Sunscreen Serum. Every morning after I get out of the shower, I apply the broad spectrum SPF 30 serum all over my face, décolletage, and tops of my hands before I do anything else. The hydrating formula is incredibly lightweight and sinks right in, plus it even contains vitamin E and B5 to heal past damage.

Given that Supergoop!® Sunscreen Serum is formulated for even the most sensitive of skin types and has a PA+++ rating (meaning the formula meets the highest standards for sun protection), I’m a big proponent of this becoming an integral part of everyone’s skincare routine. Some of our subscribers will be getting this product in their October boxes and for those of you who aren’t, I wanted to make an even stronger case for why you should pick up a bottle. So I chatted with Supergoop!® founder Holly Thaggard about her serum and the importance of layering SPF products. Here’s what she had to say:

Q. Why should someone use the City Serum even as we head into fall and winter?

A. Hydration is really important this time of year. Hydrated skin is healthy, fuller skin and lack of fullness is one of the seven signs of aging. I think particularly you can’t forget your SPF right now because the sun’s rays do come through even on a cloudy fall or winter day. Our City Serum is nice because it gives you that multifunctionality, it gives you the hydration, but it also gives you the protection that you need in one step.

Q. When it comes to layering SPF, how does that work?

A. You cannot layer your SPFs—you’re always going to get the benefits of the higher SPF. So if you have an SPF 15 in your tinted moisturizer, then you’re moving onto your SPF 30, you will have SPF 30 coverage.

Q. Does the order of SPF products matter?

A. No. The higher number will win, so you want to make sure that at least somewhere in that combination of products you have an SPF 30. And certainly nothing less than an SPF 15 because we now know that SPF 15 or less doesn’t protect from skin cancer.

Q. What do you need to avoid if you’re layering SPF products?

A. You should typically put on a chemical sunscreen, like the Supergoop!® Sunscreen Serum, first because it absorbs into the skin and a mineral sunscreen, like a tinted moisturizer or CC Cream, second because it sits on top of your skin. We all sometimes don’t apply as evenly and thoroughly as we should, so you’re getting a little bit of backup protection by using more than one.
