In 2007, veteran hair and makeup artist Lisa Hilton, recognizing the shortage of men-specific skincare products, decided to launch her own company. First, though, she did research—a lot of research. For two years, she surveyed men to find out what was missing in men’s grooming. Then she gathered experts—dermatologists, makeup artists, and a few groupies—to develop formulas tailored to men’s skin, which produces 20% more oil than women’s. Rehab London was born.
Hilton describes Rehab as rock ‘n’ roll on the outside—think slick packaging and a promo team dubbed the Locker Room Girls—but gentle on the inside. Suitable for even the most sensitive skin, the line uses botanical ingredients—bamboo granules, plankton extract, and volcanic sand, for example—plus essential oils like rosehip, sweet almond, and tea tree.
Hilton still puts in a few days a month as a makeup artist on the set of shows like Downton Abbey. Allen Leech, who plays Tom Branson on the show, is a devout Rehab London fan.
