Made Man Editor Steve Mazzucchi (the viking on the right) has been growing Movember mustaches since Bush II was in the White House, so he’s something of a Movember OG. For proof, look no further than this NY Daily News article from 2007 (his first Movember rodeo). That year his team, dressed as the '86 Mets, won the best Team Mo award and raised more money than the entire nation of Spain (to be fair Movember hadn’t yet become the global phenomenon it is today). These days Mazzucchi also supports the cause by spreading the word on Made Man with all kinds of fantastic Movember content from growing tips to this amazing video with Parks and Recreation’s Nick Offerman eating a raw onion. Birchbox Man was lucky enough to get some advice from Mazzucchi on how to have the best Movember ever.
“I think beard champion Jack Passion said it best: ‘Healthy man, healthy beard.’ In other words, if you eat right, exercise regularly, manage your stress, and have plenty of sex, much like an animal's coat, your mustache will grow in thick and strong and exhibit a majestic sheen.”
“As long as you grow boldly and confidently, things will go well for you. As Movember CEO Adam Garone says: ‘Wear the mustache, don’t let the mustache wear you.’”
“Just own it. In fact, I actually grow a type of mustache I call a ‘face-creeper,’ which means it covers a lot of real estate and I sort of look like James Hetfield from Metallica. This leaves my options open for the end-of-the-month party, when I can shape it into a horseshoe or chevron or whatever I need for my costume.”
“You do need to be sensitive. Although usually once it grows out a bit, it's soft and smooth rather than prickly, meaning it's ready to offer mustache rides. Related point: if your girl isn't on board with you growing a mustache to fight cancer and support men's health, she's probably not worth sticking with.”
“When your ‘stache starts growing on you, it starts growing on you, you know? Mine usually extends a week or two into December. You can actually keep raising funds through December 7th and going that route is probably a little truer to the cause. If you wait to trim at the end it leaves you with a big canvas to carve out something special come Movember party time.”
