Birchbox Breakdown

Here’s a quick lesson in skincare history: In West Africa, traditional black soap is made by mixing the ash of local plants and barks with healing oils. Rich in vitamins A and E, it’s become prized by women around the world for its abilities to battle blemishes and the signs of skin aging. This powerful powder is African black soap in its raw form, which, when mixed with water, creates a scrub that gently washes away dead skin. Its raw, organic formula—no harsh chemicals, dyes, or additives—leaves skin clean, rejuvenated, and healthy. The multifunctional formula also calms irritated scalps, clears up acne, and soothes razor bumps.

How it Works

All-natural ingredients including plantain peels, cocoa pods, and tree kernels are roasted in clay ovens, broken down into ash, then packaged into jars. When mixed with water, the powder creates a scrub that dissolves sebum, helping to exfoliate dead skin.

How to Use

The soap comes in pure powder form. Add a spoonful of water to powder to create a paste, then gently massage onto face and body with fingertips. The more water you add, the thinner the paste becomes. Wash away with water. To create shampoo, dilute with water.
Cocoa pod ash, plantain peel ash, locally produced palm kernel oil, camwood bark

Amazing product, TERRIBLE smell

I bought this product on a whim not having heard anything about it before nor having any one recommend it to me. Let me tell you; it does not smell good. Like, not at all. Think cigarettes and campfire. The smell dissipates as soon as you towel off too. My boyfriend (who also dislikes the smell) has no idea I've used it, and I snuggle up immediately after I shower! But it really is an amazing product! Though Ive never experienced anything other than mild acne and the occasional break out, this did wonders for the tone and texture of my skin. It "feels" clean after using it. Tight and refreshed, but not too dry or stripped, if that makes any sense. A little dab will do ya' and this large jar will last forever. If you use it for just your face, I'd be shocked if you ever needed to buy another jar again!

Soap is good

This is a wonderful soap that is all natural. It is a great amount for the price. One of the most natural soaps that I have every experience.

I love this stuff!

Finally PURE black soap. I use this on my scalp (hair), as a weekly face mask and to clear up skin on my body. For me this is a holy grail product because it's all natural and seems to leave my skin incredibly healthy.

Messy

Had an odd smell and was messy, not worth it for me. Left my skin feeling dirtier than before I washed it

Excellent for discoloration

I have been using this product for about 6 months now. I needed something for uneven tone and hyperpigmentation and this has been the best, quickest and most effective product at brightening and making my skin tone more even. It is very effective as a cleanser and leaves your skin squeaky clean.

The verdict's still out....

I thought this product had a really interesting description so I decided to give it a try. I think at the time I bought I was excited about it being organic and claiming to help clear up acne and what-all, but now I'm not so ecstatic about it. I've found it to be a little too harsh for my face. The soap dries out my skin and you have to be careful because there are little bits of rock or large sand particles that will scratch up your skin. My mom said it smells like an ashtray. But I'm going to stick with it to give the benefits a chance to happen.
