History

After watching his relatives go through skin cancer scares, COOLA founder Chris Birchby vowed to spread the word about sun protection. In 2002, Birchby decided to develop an SPF line that that would replace goopy textures and unappealing smells in favor of organic formulas and clean scents. Five years (and countless consultations with FDA experts) later, COOLA emerged. The company produces all its small-batch products in its California headquarters and is continually tweaking formulas to incorporate the latest scientific findings.

Philosophy

Eco-conscious sun protection. COOLA’s classic sunscreens and mineral sunblocks are made with an antioxidant-rich moisturizing base, and they’re 70 percent organic. You’ll find sustainable plant ingredients in all their formulas, and all their packaging is recyclable.

COOLA is serious about educating us all about the importance of sunscreen—they suggest reapplying every two hours if you’re exposing yourself to direct sunlight.
