According to legend, Elizabeth Arden used this rich balm as a soothing ointment on her thoroughbred horses’ legs.

Elizabeth Arden

Birchbox Breakdown

Elizabeth Arden’s apricot-hued cream is such a classic, we think it deserves a display in the Smithsonian. Developed in 1930 by the beauty maven herself, the award-winning formula enjoyed instant global success and has never gone out of style. The creamy, multi-purpose salve not only hydrates dry skin, it adds shine to lips and lids, tames unruly brows, conditions cuticles, and even soothes minor scrapes and sunburns.

How it Works

Key ingredient beta-hydroxy helps soothes irritation, while moisturizing petrolatum keeps dryness at bay. Next up, salicylic acid works as a gentle exfoliator to unclog pores and refine dull skin. Rounding out the formula, vitamin E (a.k.a. tocopherol) infuses skin with antioxidants to guard against damaging free radicals.

How to Use

The sky’s the limit. Apply a generous amount onto skin to combat dryness, sunburn, or redness anytime and anywhere. Or dab a small amount onto brows to keep unruly hairs in line; smooth onto lips, cheekbones, and lids for a glossy, fresh-off-the-runway look; massage into dry cuticles and rough heels; or use as a post-shave treatment.

Petrolatum 56.8%, Lanolin, Mineral Oil, Fragrance, Salicylic Acid, Propylparaben, Castor Oil, Corn Oil, Tocopherol, BHT, Iron Oxides

Multipurpose wonder.

I love this product! A little goes a long way and there are so many ways to use it. I use it daily on my lips and I like to add whatever product is left to my cuticles. It's too gooey to use as a normal moisturizer so I'll apply it to areas that need some extra moisture before going to sleep. I also use it for "no makeup" days, I'll put a tiny bit on my eyelids, above my cheekbones and on my lips. If I want a dewy look I'll add a very small amount to a cream blush and use it on my cheeks, lips and sometimes as an eyeshadow, it looks very natural and pretty, like you just went running through a field (minus the running and the allergies).

Not fot lips

I first tried the product on my lips, which was way too sticky and thick for that purpose. It's also too sticky as a moisturizer (even on hands). However, it does work well on cuticles as well as heels.

Effective

This product is a bit greasy for daytime wear, but is perfect for hydrating durning the evening! It smells a lot better than most products of it's kind. Perfect for the winter, dry season!

Nice for chapped lips
Purchased

This is nice and moisturizing, but seems a little greasy to use anywhere other than your lips. The smell is also not too appealing. Overall nice to use as an overnight lip product.

A classic for good reason
Purchased

I use 8 hour cream for many reasons, as an around the eye moisturizer, lip balm, spot treatment for flaky skin, cuticles, fly away hairs. Occasionally, when my skin is extra dry, I will use it as an intense moisturizing treatment applying to my entire face. In a pinch, it can also double as an eye makeup remover and a hand cream. It does have a greasy, vaseline like texture BUT it does not cause breakouts (I break out easily). I always have a tube on hand.

I love this stuff!

I have been using this for years and a little bit goes a long way. I primarily use it for my lips, but it is great for little dry spots on my face, or for keeping my cuticles in good shape. The smell is very nice, and I like the bit of sheer orange color on my lips. My daughter loves it, too.

Takes more than one use

When first opened, the smell is not inviting. When first used, it seems greasy. However, I stuck with it and found the smell dissipates and that over time works fairly well. It's no miracle, but skin does show improvement.
