Birchbox Bride: Surviving the Heat with Plenty of Southern Charm

Between staffers getting engaged and subscribers seeking big-day beauty advice, every season is wedding season at Birchbox. That's why we created the Birchbox Wedding Planner, to help with bridesmaid and groomsman gifts (hint: subscriptions!), makeup and hair ideas, and more. Once a month, we'll be sharing real-life inspiration from brides in the Birchbox community. Want to be featured? Link to your wedding photos in the comments of this article!

The Wedding: Subscriber and interior designer Tara Kosinsky tied the knot in September at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Vibe: “It was romantic, elegant, and a touch rustic given that it was outdoors. We had our ‘first look’ photos downtown because we wanted to capture the charming buildings and the cobblestone streets; then the wedding party photos were taken at the plantations which gave us the trees, magnolias, and the Spanish moss.”

Best Piece of Advice: “You play this day out your entire life, and I think it’s really important to just sit back and don’t rush it. Everything goes so fast and it’s just a high adrenaline day. Soaking all it in is really important.”

The Details: “I do interior design, so I approached the planning process like I would a job. It was a ton of fun! I found fabric and a wall that I really loved and pulled the color scheme (pale pink and light blue) from that. I ended up using the fabric as table runners, and I framed the wall covering in picture frames and used them as trays.”

The Flowers: “I thought the florist did a really great job mixing the floral textures. We used blushing bride proteas and Dusty Millers, which softened it up and brought in the grey-blues in the bridesmaids’ dresses. I also loved the anemones, with the white petals and the navy blue center.”

The Bridesmaids: “My maid of honor was my older sister. Then Jessie is my best friend from college. Whitney is also one of my best friends—after college we moved to Chicago together and she was with me through the transition of being single in the city to meeting Richard. Rachel is my new sister in law, so that balanced it all out. Each person represented a different chapter in my life—it was a good group of girls.”

The Dress: “I knew I wanted something strapless with a sweetheart neckline. The dress that I ended up buying was probably only the third dress that I tried on—I got all emotional!”

The Makeup: “In general, I went for an effortless look with big lashes. For hair, I wanted a romantic, tousled style. I really liked the soft waves and curls.”

The First Look: “When I was getting my makeup done, I was really jittery and then the second that I saw Richard I was just like, ‘Ah, I can relax now.’ The first look calmed our nerves and it was the only time of the day that we got to spend just the two of us together.”

The Ceremony: “We wrote the whole ceremony ourselves, which was really important for us. The process took about six months—we had a Google doc set up and we both added parts—it was really special.”

The Reception: “We had a strolling reception, which is common in Charleston. Instead of a sit-down dinner, you have two stations set up. And since you don’t have assigned seating, it encourages mingling and socializing. We also started the music early so people starting dancing. It worked out because we had a young crowd!”

The Feast: “The food was definitely Southern-inspired: We had shrimp and grits and a BBQ station, and the appetizers were fried green tomatoes and crab cakes. At the bar we had sweet tea vodka and lemonade, which is something they like to drink down there.”

The Biggest Challenge: “The day of the wedding it was like 93 degrees; I thought that people may start passing out! But by the end of the night people just let loose and had a good time.”
