Founded in 1971, iTailor got its start offering custom shirts and suiting direct from its factory in Asia. Now, customers can shop via an innovative "3-D" design app, which lets them select from a range of fabrics and styles before entering in their measurements. iTailor is the least expensive of the website we surveyed, with suits starting at $189.
Best For: The bargain hunter
Modern Tailor has been offering custom shirts, suits, and pants at everyman prices since 2007. Their own MT Collection is full of handsome options, including a bright blue tuxedo jacket and sturdy cashmere overcoats. All these, plus their more traditional offering, are available in personalized sizes. Suits begin at $299.95 for a selection of pure wool options.
Best For: The sartorial risk taker
Vancouver-based Indochino claims to be the leading website for custom menswear, with a 10-minute measurement process, four-week turnaround, and satisfaction guarantee. With new designs launching every week, they have a huge range of options, from classic to cutting-edge. The site also sells a wealth of accessories, including pocket squares and tie clips. Suits start at $429.
Best For: The detail obsessive
Black Lapel began in 2011 with a three-pronged goal of quality, accessibility, and education. Their sharp suits are clean and modern, in a range of patterns from solids to herringbone and pinstripes, and their “Flawless Fit Promise” includes up to $75 worth of alterations for each suit purchased. Single suits begin at $449, with group discounts for wedding parties (listen up, grooms-to-be).
Best For: The clean-cut modernist
The Esquire-approved Proper Suit started in 2010, and offers a hybrid online and offline experience. As is expected on the higher-end of the market, the brand offers in-person consultations and measuring services in a number of major American cities. A $150 deposit locks in a reservation with a specialist who has at least 150 hours of training under his belt. The final products are, unsurprisingly, real winners, but with a starting cost of $750, they'll also make the biggest dent in your wallet.
