Birchbox Man Q&A: Eugene Tong and Matthew Marden of DETAILS Magazine

DETAILS magazine Style Director Eugene Tong and Fashion Director Matthew Marden (above, left and right, respectively) are largely responsible for the look and feel of each issue. Tong’s focus is on front-of-book style pages, though he also helps Marden with the more feature-focused “well” stories (including the cover) each month. We were lucky to ask the two style pros—close collaborators for nearly 10 years—a few questions about their tastes, wardrobe essentials, and working relationship.

How do your jobs overlap?

Eugene Tong: With Matthew, I direct and oversee DETAILS’s overall fashion point of view and aesthetic. He is the ying to my yang. We like different things but have the same taste level.
Matthew Marden: We curate what we think are the most important and interesting things to present to our reader. We decide what we think is stronger for the Style Section and what would make a great well fashion story—I trust him implicitly.

BB Man: How would you describe each other’s style?

ET: Matthew is confident in his personal style. He doesn’t chase trends, he knows what works for him and sticks with it. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he is wildly handsome.
MM: Eugene is confident and has an appreciation for construction and fit. He is all about juxtaposition—mainly sportswear with tailoring—it's a mix that makes him modern.

BB Man: What’s one extremely versatile article of clothing that a man should own?

ET: The perfect white tee. It’s an everyday, year-round wear. I wear it on its own dressed up or down, as a layering piece, and under everything.
MM: A navy suit. You can dress it up with a shirt and tie, or dress it down with a tee and white sneakers. You can break it apart and pair the jacket with your favorite jeans or the pants with your favorite sweatshirt.

BB Man: This month we sampled Bread & Boxers to many subscribers—an everyday essentials brand you guys recently raved about. What kind of thought should a guy give to wardrobe basics?

ET: Treat them as investments. Will this be something you’ll still want to wear in 3 years? If you find something that works, stick with it and buy in multiples.
MM: Classics are essential and always in fashion. They are the most important part of a man’s wardrobe.

BB Man: What’s one key thing the other has taught you professionally?

ET: Matthew is one of the most honest and genuine people I know. And in our world, that is hard to find. He reaffirms my belief that being nice and treating people how you would like to be treated can go a long way.
MM: Eugene is extremely precise and has an insane attention to detail. He is absolutely meticulous. He leaves nothing to chance.
