How To: Get the Man-Bun of Your Dreams

Daily we gaze upon the man-buns of our colleagues Allan and Vicente (pictured above, left and right respectively), our hearts brimming with envy. Having reached peak jealousy, we finally mustered the courage to ask them for their man-bun pro tips. Use their maintenance and styling advice to get your hair in perfect condition for an equally impressive man-bun.

If you're just starting to grow out your locks, first check these hair-growing tips to be sure you have the best canvas for your eventual man-bun.

1. Keep your hair clean.

Vicente: “If you are going to grow your hair you must maintain it. No grease, guys—styling greasy hair looks like a hot mess.”

2. But—make it look messy.

Vicente: “Messy containment is key. It helps create the overall look.”
Allan: “Try a medium-hold styler to keep stray hairs in place just enough.”

3. A proper hair tie is your new best friend.

Vicente: “Use a thick hair tie with no metal. Metal will pull and tear your hair—no good.”
Allan: “The man-bun is most helpful when eating. Especially soup.”

4. But—don’t tie it too tight.

Allan: “You'll end up with a headache without realizing why.”

5. Don’t overthink the bun’s placement.

Vicente: “Try a few different placements on your head and see what works best for you. I like to move mine up and down my head depending on my mood/look that day.”
