I recently moved into a new apartment. Getting the place up and running has been a slow process. It’s tough to get excited about sorting through sales at Pottery Barn, and the endless flea market scouring on weekends is just too time consuming. However, the quest to give my home the style and personality it deserves got quite the shot in the arm recently from an unlikely hero: shag carpeting.
Shag rugs have come back in a serious way. Although these fluffy floor pieces were once considered a tacky relic of the disco era, there are some cool modern takes out there nowadays and they can really make a room pop. Plus, they feel great on your bare feet.
My advice for pulling off the shag is to take the unexpected route. I love the Safavieh Leather Shag with its rustic strips of suede and leather. Another great option is West Elm’s Bello Shag Rug, a hand-woven rug with both large and small pieces of yarn that doesn't look too furry.
Top either one of these with a glass or Lucite coffee table like this one from Design Within Reach and you’ve taken your living room to new heights of coolness just like that.
