The skincare triumvirate we’re referring to? Cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize. These are the building blocks of healthy skin. The method was first introduced by Clinique, after the publication of a 1968 Vogue article exploring the question of whether great skin could be “created.” The three-part system endures as the standard for healthy skin today. Here’s what every guy should know about this proactive, synergistic process:
Cleanser is your offense, attacking dirt and grime to remove oil, grime, and other un-pleasantness that hangs around on top of your skin—and in your pores. It’s a no-brainer for daily use.
If cleanser is your initial attack, an exfoliant is your reliable fail-safe. Performed two or three times a week, exfoliation is essential to ridding of any dead cells your cleanser fails to remove. It also clears oil from pores—which could otherwise cause breakouts. Finally, an exfoliant prepares the skin for a moisturizer: Without a good scrub, dead skin cells and oil glands will repel your face lotion.
Think of moisturizer as a line of defense protecting your skin from environmental damage, plus a reparative step that replenishes skin after all of that deep cleaning. Try to use one with SPF, to protect against UV rays at the same time.
These are the fundamentals—but it get’s plenty more advanced from here depending on your skin type. Check out our video on skincare basics to learn more about building out a regimen that’s right for you.
