What’s Your Resolution for 2014?

New Year’s resolutions are tricky: They’re all about striking a balance between challenging and achievable. When it comes to challenges, who better to ask than the thinkers and innovators we admire most? To ring in 2014, we asked some of our favorite influencers to share their New Year’s resolutions, big and small. Take a look and then tell us yours in the comments!

“Be present, be mindful. Consume less. Get in the ocean every day.”—Emily Sugihara, founder, Baggu

“In 2014, I’m vowing to read more non-fiction—you know, lifelong learning! I have a few books lined up—including Inside the Dream Palace (about NYC’s Chelsea Hotel), Going Clear (Scientology!), and The Drunken Botanist (on the history of making alcohol), which are all supposed to be as highly entertaining as they are interesting. I’m itching to experience that weird sense of accomplishment that comings with marking them as “read” in my Goodreads account.”—Erica Cerulo, co-founder, Of a Kind

“This year I’m resolving to eat more meals at home because eating out in New York is always expensive and rarely healthy. To that end, I’ve been encouraging my fiancé to learn how to cook by giving him a few go-to meals that are simple enough for him to wrap his head around. Lentils like Baked Beans, Miso Sweet Potato Broccoli Bowl, and One Pan Farro with Tomatoes are all warm, cozy, and fairly fool-proof.”—Clare Mazur, co-founder, Of a Kind

“My resolution for 2014 is to listen more and express more appreciation for the people I encounter.”—Bre Pettis, CEO, MakerBot 3D printers

“I want to cook more southern Indian food, which involves a lot more fish, coconut milk, and fresh herbs than northern Indian food, which is mostly what we see in Indian restaurants here.”—Amander Hesser, co-founder, Food52

“I want to make time to swim regularly, because it makes me feel better both mentally and physically, and learn how to make great congee—it’s the ultimate comfort food.”—Merrill Stubbs, co-founder, Food52

"Work on ending all of my meetings two minutes early, so that I can be on time to my next meeting."—Neil Blumenthal, co-founder, Warby Parker

"Self Care. A critical priority for effectiveness—daily meditation, some time spent alone to reflect and dream, and lots of baths. Following my intuition when it comes to all aspects of life. Fearlessness. Things are great in my life and I am thankful for all that I get to do and experience in the world. I know to keep that heading in the direction of my desires I need to be fearless. My top resolution for 2014 is fearlessness."—Tara Stiles, Strala Yoga

“More cooking at home; plan a monthly dinner date with my college girlfriends; unplug from email for a day each weekend; clean out my closets; go to bed earlier.”—Hayley Barna, co-founder, Birchbox

"Mine is to go 'experience' NYC more, beyond when visitors are in town. So Broadway shows, music shows, things like Sleep No More & Hack the Met; at least one a month."—Katia Beauchamp, co-founder, Birchbox
