We like to think of the Golden Globes as the rowdy younger sister to the buttoned-up big brother Oscars. Why? Because funny things happen when a crowd full of A-listers sits down to a booze-fueled ceremony. From the long, tipsy speeches to the irreverent hosts—yes, Tina and Amy are BACK—we’re never quite sure what will happen. While we can only speculate, here are some of the reasons why we can’t wait for the 71st Annual Golden Globes, airing Sunday, January 12.
Hostesses With the Most(esses?)
Last year, tag team Tina Fey and Amy Poehler showed up just about every host of every award show, ever. This year we expect to see more costume changes, comic slams, and musical numbers. Much like fellow Birchbox editor Ally, I hope the twosome lampoons Seth MacFarlane’s lame Oscar tune “We Saw Your Boobs.” (Don’t mess with the ladies, Seth.)
Anything That Comes Out of J.Law’s Mouth
The queen of the red-carpet sound bite returns to the awards this year as both a presenter and a nominee (for her role in American Hustle). After the commotion caused by her misinterpreted First Wives Club-referencing acceptance speech last year (“I beat Meryl”), we hope the press has finally wizened up to her razor-sharp wit.
Commercial Breaks (Seriously)
Half the fun of watching the Golden Globes is reading (and writing) tweets about the Golden Globes. But don’t forget the other social media goodies, too—with at-the-table celeb Instagrams (getting more inebriated as the night wears on) and to-the-minute Snapchats (check out the snaps from the GIRLS season three premiere), you’ll find us happily refreshing our feeds during each commercial break.
The Return of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman
Since the series finale of Breaking Bad earlier this year, I’ve experienced serious separation anxiety from my favorite on-screen duo, Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. I simply cannot wait to see Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul (both nominated, of course) reunited once again, even if it’s out of character and at a fancy awards ceremony.
The Awkwardness of “Miss Golden Globe”
There’s something hilariously uncomfortable about watching Miss Golden Globe hang out and awkwardly shuffle to hand out awards each year. For 2014, the honor is bestowed upon Sosie Bacon (daughter of Kevin)—we bid her good luck and comfortable shoes.
