Equal parts punk and pixie, singer Kristen May is our kind of pop star — she’s got the smudgy liner and statement boots, but she’s also got a heartbreakingly clear voice and a no-nonsense attitude. May is the frontwoman of the poised-to-explode Vedera, a Kansas City foursome that just released Stages, their second album. We snagged her in between shows to get her beauty faves.
What’s your beauty routine?
When we're on tour I stick to a fairly consistent routine so I can focus on things outside of my makeup. I start with primer so everything stays on, then use Kiehl's Ultra Facial Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15. It has apricot kernel extract and chamomile to calm the skin and never feels heavy. I have to have some sunscreen in there — no sunburn for me!
I always use bronzer or blush to define my cheekbones. Usually I go for a semi-neutral to soft pink lip, like Becca's Beach Tint. I rarely make it to the beach but at least I can live vicariously through my makeup!
And on stage?
For night I add some black eyeliner, play up my eyes a bit more, and add extra blush. Smokey eyes are always fun for night and stage.
Any eye makeup tips?
I trust MAC’s line of eyeshadows but I like to mix the colors up. For a natural-looking smokey eye, Kid is great for the crease. Then I experiment with different shades: Dazzlelight, Hoodwinked, Saddle, Mulch, and Embark. Whatever the color, make sure when you use eyeliner it blends into the shadow — so much more natural if you can’t see the line!
What’s your survival kit?
Chapstick, mascara, and an eyelash curler. And I love love Oscar Blandi's Pronto Dry Shampoo for the road.
