Blue Crush: Indigo Eye Makeup

I’ve had a serious black eyeliner habit since 2005, so it was a big leap for me to test out Stila’s bold blue Sparkle Liquid Eyeliner for my recent Intern Diaries post. While the electric shade shocked me at first, it instantly invigorated my look and left me feeling a little more confident for the rest of the day. This spring I dare you to set aside your go-to kohl in favor of indigo. Here's some real world inspiration and tips for how to get the deep blue looks, from testing the waters to diving in:

Shallow Waters

Dip your toe into the trend by going for a strategically applied navy liner, like Tumblr user Laura Kaira. The pop of color is perfect for the makeup minimalist, and it's low key enough to wear every day. With a small eye shadow brush apply INIKA’s mineral shadow in midnight along your lower lash line and dust your top lids with a champagne shadow like Jouer's Cream Eyeshadow Crayon in Rococo. Smudging the shadow keeps the look effortless, especially when paired with a dewy moisturizer and rosy lip stain.

Waist Deep

Wade into the blue waters by sweeping a creamy metallic shadow across lids à la Miss Mieu on Tumblr. Begin by lining lids with a shimmery shadow, like Laura Mercier’s Caviar Stick Eye Color in Sapphire, followed by a couple coats of mascara. Then brighten the inner corners of your eyes with Cynthia Rowley Beauty's Eye Pencil in Silver. Wear with mermaid waves and a spritz of sea salt spray.

The Deep End

Dive right into the trend with a dramatic, runway-inspired look like Tumblr user Hanna Håkansson did with a bold teal shade and minimal makeup. Build color by mixing the light blues and sea foam greens in Coastal Scents’ Neutral Mirage Palette, keeping the shape sharp and defined. A saturated hue and little to no blush or mascara keeps this look fresh and graphic.
