Birchbox Short List

Forgive us for stating the obvious but: It’s Monday, and you’re not quite ready to start the work week. That’s why we’re bringing you the Birchbox Short List, a spirited guide to the best celeb gossip, videos, beauty news, and more. Think of it as your second cup of Joe—we promise we’ll leave you feeling ready to conquer the day (and week) ahead. Here, our picks for the week of February 17

Taking Stock

Wave goodbye to sad women laughing alone with salad. LeanIn.org has teamed with Getty Images to create a new kind of stock image, highlighting diversity and strength in women. Some of our favorites: wide-ranging portraits of boss ladies doing their thing and a young lady suited up in hockey gear.

Lost in Love

Call it a Valentine’s Day hangover, but we can’t help but get lost in these classic images of actor Steve McQueen and his longtime love, Neile Adams. [Insert sighhh here.]

Love for Equality

Juno actress Ellen Page came out this weekend in a powerful speech at the Time to Thrive Conference. With a voice shaky with nerves, she admitted her own struggle with her sexuality, and thanked the crowd for their support. “We deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame, and without compromise,” she says. So beautifully simple, yet terribly important.

Man with a Band

Today is a very important day for late night TV, with the premiere of the Jimmy Fallon-led Tonight Show, but there’s also some great news for Late Night with Seth Meyers: Renaissance man and SNL alum Fred Armisen will join Meyers as the show’s bandleader and music curator. We hope this means we’ll get a reprise of his many musical characters from the sketch show.

Fashion Week Diaries

For all its fanfare, in reality Fashion Week can be hectic, exhausting, and (we’ll say it) a little over-commercialized. Enter this account from veteran fashion writer Lynn Yaeger, whose Fashion Week diary oozes with sincerity, snark, and a little magic, too.

Missing Ms. Temple

We were sad to lose one of our great entertainers last week with the passing of Shirley Temple Black. Beyond her childhood, Temple went on to live a life rich in activism and adventure—did you know she was the U.S. Ambassador to Ghana? After reading her obit in the Times, we hope there is an in-depth bio in the works.

Sosh in Sochi

The Olympic Games + the Internet = Sochi Memes. Our favorite so far combines the fast-talking Shoshanna from Girls with the greatest athletes on Earth. Behold, The Soshi Games.
