While we love reading about celebrities, we don't necessarily want to hang out with them. These ladies, however, combine brains, beauty, and bold personality into one BFF-worthy package.
A quick note to the haters: Women can most definitely be funny. Case in point: Ms. Mindy Kaling, who makes us LOL on the regular with her sitcom, The Mindy Project. Whether she’s navigating sexting drama or falling in love with her BFF coworker (!), Dr. Mindy Lahiri shines with her own brand of humor, loveable girliness, and smarts thanks to Kaling’s expert writing. And according to her Instagram feed, Kaling is an unabashed beauty nut. We’d love to trade secrets with you, Mindy!
You may recognize Brie Larson from her small roles in 21 Jump Street and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World or as the lead in last year’s indie Short Term 12. Regardless of where you first spotted her, however, it’s likely that you noticed Larson’s down-to-Earth appeal. With her off-beat sense of humor and dedication to participating in projects that really mean something to her—instead of ones that bring in the big bucks—Larson’s just the kind of friend we’d like to add to our own girl gang.
If you’ve seen a rom-com in the past five or so years, then you’ve most likely encountered Lake Bell, who’s played everything from Alec Baldwin’s nightmare second wife in It’s Complicated to Ashton Kutcher’s “sexy nerd” pal in No Strings Attached. Last year she broke out with the very funny In a World—which she wrote, directed, and acts in, by the way—in which she plays an aspiring voiceover actress struggling to make it in a boys game. (Side note: We have to give props to her wonderfully ‘90s wardrobe of flannel, florals, and overalls.) Funny, smart, and stylish—what’s not to love?
Last year, Olivia Wilde blew us away with her stripped-down performance in Drinking Buddies, in which she plays a beer-swigging, bike-riding tomboy in her late ‘20s trying to “figure it all out.” But what really convinced us of this actress’s BFF-worthiness was this honest (and super funny) essay she wrote about turning 30, the Hollywood machine, and self-acceptance. Just the type of tell-it-like-it-is pal we could picture ourselves pondering life with over brunch.
With brains and talent for days (not to mention an incredible instinct for red-carpet fashion) we can’t help but want to learn more about Nyong’o, who is nominated for a 2014 Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Perhaps our favorite aspect of the young actress’s personality, however, is her unpretentious excitement about her career, as evidenced by her endearing fan-girl selfies from the Golden Globes.
