The Ultimate Facial Cleansing Brush

Just as different cleansers target different skin concerns, different facial cleansing brushes focus on different features. We tested two of the most popular on the market— the Clarisonic Mia and the DDF Revolve—to bring you the lowdown.

Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System

Price: $125
Best for: Deep clean without irritation
The Lowdown: Using patented sonic technology, the Mia oscillates back and forth at more than 300 movements per second (whoa) to dislodge impurities stuck in pores. The micromassage also stimulates the skin, which in turn allows your other products to work even harder. When compared to washing your face with your hands, the Mia removes up to two times as much dirt and oil and up to six times as much makeup. And even though it’s incredibly effective, it’s also extraordinarily gentle on your skin.
How to Use: Apply cleanser of choice to skin or directly to a damp brush head. Using small circular motions, glide the brush over skin, spending about 20 seconds on your forehead, 20 seconds on your nose and chin, and 10 seconds on each cheek.
Brush Heads: Customize further by choosing from a variety of brush heads, including normal, sensitive, delicate, acne-prone, and deep-pore. Replace your brush head every three months.
Settings: The Mia has a single setting, but if you’re looking for added control, you can upgrade to either the two-speed Mia 2, the slightly larger three-speed Aria, or the Plus, which features three speeds as well as a special body brush head and setting for in-shower use.
Charging: The Mia comes with a handy travel-friendly charger. Before using for the first time, allow your brush 24 hours to charge. After that, only charge as needed. A full charge will last 20 days.

DDF Revolve 500x Micro-Polishing System

Price: $139
Best for: Deep clean plus microdermabrasion
The Lowdown: A true two-for-one deal, the DDF Revolve is both a cleansing brush and an at-home microdermabrasion tool. 360-degree rotation technology ensures a deep clean, while polishing crystals and a custom exfoliator pad deliver the skin-brightening results usually only found with pricey in-office treatments.
How to Use: For everyday use, apply the cleanser of your choice to a brush head and gently glide over your skin. For microdermabrasion, use the included Micro-Derma Polishing Crystals once or twice a week on nonconsecutive days. Whether you’re cleansing or polishing, a one-minute timer will indicate that you’re finished.
Brush Heads: The system comes with three brush heads: a micro-derma exfoliator pad, a regular cleansing brush, and a delicate cleansing brush. Replace your pad and brush heads every four months.
Settings: There are three modes to choose from, depending on your skin type, concern, and sensitivity: low, normal, and high. For microdermabrasion, it’s recommended to use only low and normal. When it comes to cleansing, mix and match the normal and delicate brush heads with the various settings for customized results.
Charging: The Revolve runs on two AA batteries—no charger required!
