Polish, Polish, Polish
It’s all about the polish. You don’t need to spend a fortune on nail color, but quality is key for long-lasting wear. I have been extremely impressed by Ruffian's debut collection. You wouldn't necessarily expect a NYC-based fashion house known for its edgy style to focus on practicality, but their colors are specifically formulated to be long-lasting. I put the bright orange Ruffian Fox Hunt to the test. Thanks to the unique easy-to-grip bottle cap, the color applied smoothly and evenly, so I had high hopes. And, after four days of digging around at the bottom of my purse, washing dishes, and playing outside with a four-year-old, it more than held its own. Minor tip wear is unavoidable, but I ultimately came out chip-free.
A base coat is like the primer for your makeup—it creates a smooth foundation so your polish glides on bump-free and really adheres. Try Ruffian Gesso Base Coat as the first line in your defense against chips, or for a gel-like mani at home, Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab is genius. Tip: if you’ve been wearing hand cream, start by swiping polish-free nails with nail polish remover to get rid of any excess oils.
Sometimes we get a little lazy and forgo the nail file, but uniform, snag-free nails are key for avoiding chips (and they look better, too). Make sure to file in one direction to avoid damaging your tips.
Healthy Nails Are Chip-Free Nails
Dry and brittle nails are the top causes of botched manicures. Keep your nails healthy by applying a cuticle oil or cream like JULEP Essential Cuticle Oil after you polish your nails, and each day thereafter. For extremely dry or peeling nails, ask your doctor about trying a supplement to support healthy hair, skin, and nails. Finally, drink plenty of water—you’ll see the difference in both your skin and nails.
Top It Off
Without a high-quality top coat, you're practically guaranteed chipped nails. Try Ruffian Varnish Top Coat, which includes caviar extract to hydrate nails, plus a UV filter to prevent polish discoloration and nail yellowing. Reapply your top coat every few days for an extra boost of shine and protection.
