If Rashida Jones were an athlete, she’d be a shoo-in for the decathalon. That’s how supremely versatile the L.A. native is. You may know her from her scene-stealing roles in The Office and Parks and Recreation, but that’s just the beginning. The daughter of media mogul and producer Quincy Jones and actress Peggy Lipton, Jones is a screenwriter, singer, comic book author, and as of this month, jewelry designer. She’s partnering with sisters Danielle Snyder and Jodie Snyder of New York-based jewelry label DanniJo, to launch Fine by Dannijones, a capsule jewelry collection of delicate 10- and 14-carat gold pieces. She's also making a guest appearance in the Birchbox Shop—check out her holiday wish list (and shop them yourself!). We got the chance to chat with the star about her latest venture, plus her best red carpet trick and why she loves the holidays so darn much.
Congratulations on Fine by Dannijones! What was your design process?
We did most of our collaborating on Skype and on the phone. We would send each other references and inspirations. It was such a pleasant process. Danielle and Jodie are incredibly bright, talented, and detail-oriented, so I just plugged into their style of working!
How would you describe your style? Do you have an everyday uniform?
I grew up wearing a uniform so yes, I strive for uniform. A lot of grey, white, and black. A lot of collared shirts and blazers and skirts. Wait, that was my actual uniform! I'm so boring.
In college, you were in an a cappella group. Do you have a signature tune?
Ha, a signature tune! I wish. A signature tune is what officially makes you an icon, right? My favorite holiday song is Donny Hathaway, "This Christmas."
If you could create a hashtag to represent you, what would it be?
Favorite red carpet beauty trick?
Think of anything else other than being blinded by flashes on a red carpet. Anything that makes you happy so that the smile is real.
What's always in your handbag—beauty or otherwise?
A psychotic amount of lip glosses or lip stains.
Has a product ever changed your life or at least your routine?
Dry shampoo is my savior, especially with bangs. With that Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray it actually looks like I have thick hair! (I don't.)
Is there anyone you're dying to work with?
Woody Allen. Mike Nichols.
Do you have any exciting projects in the works?
Besides Fine with Dannijones? I just start developing TV shows at Warner Brothers. We sold a few things and I get to work with insanely talented writers everyday. I’m very exciting to see what they create from scratch.
What is your favorite part of the holidays and why?
I love how much collective hope is in the air. You can feel people contemplating the year they’re leaving behind and making wishes for the New Year. It's an auspicious time.
Do you have any holiday or gifting traditions?
I have a huge family so we do Secret Santa. My dad always gets us all a great gift like mini speakers or a beautiful book.
What's at the top of your holiday wish list?
Honestly, this will sound cheesy, but I'm in a pay-it-forward moment in my life. I just want everyone to commit to one act of kindness every day. Pay for someone's coffee, smile at someone who is being grumpy, comfort a co-worker, serve at a soup kitchen, whatever. Just be kind.
