Habitually Chic’s Heather Clawson on Perfect Hostess Gifts and Why Everyone Needs a Signature Color

Interior designer Heather Clawson fills her blog, Habitually Chic, with an addictive mix of profiles of buzzy new stores, info on the latest trends, and inspiring street style pictures. Now Clawson has just released her first book, Habitually Chic: Creativity at Work. The book offers a rare, up-close-and-personal glimpse into the worlds of creative heavy-hitters like J.Crew’s Jenna Lyons, jewelry designer James de Givenchy, and interior designer Jonathan Adler. We caught up with the very busy (and very stylish) blogger just as she was about to embark on a whirlwind book tour to find out what inspires her own style and what design tips she has picked up along the way.

I love using unconventional accessories on my desk. I recently bought a silver bowl at the flea market and filled it with all the business cards I’ve collected over the years. I also use a mint julep cup for pens and an English silver toast rack for stationery.

When it comes to beauty, out of sight means out of mind. I keep all my perfumes corralled on a silver tray on top of my dresser and lipsticks in a crystal bowl. Cotton balls and Q-Tips are kept in glass jars with silver lids.

Your home should smell as good as it looks. I always light candles and spritz room spray before guests arrive. I’ve even been known to spray it in the elevator and along the hallway outside my apartment!

With the holidays approaching, you should keep extra hostess gifts on hand in case of last-minute invitations. Candles, stationery, and wine make easy gifts that are always appreciated. If you have more time, pick out a great vintage coffee table book that you know your host would love or pick up a box of Laduree macarons. Everyone loves macarons!

I’ve become known amongst my friends for my monogrammed matchboxes. I order them for myself and even friends from For Your Party. They look great sitting out but you can also include them with a candle as a gift.

Everyone should have a signature color. Mine is orange, and my friends and blog readers all think of me when they see it. I use orange ribbon to wrap gifts and for my business cards. Choosing the right color for you can be just as important as developing a logo.

I prefer when spaces look collected rather than decorated. I love mixing existing pieces with new items to make a home look extra-personal.
