Note: This image has not been digitally retouched. It has, however, had the benefit of four different dr. brandt® products—and some makeup.
For years I’ve had a policy regarding mirrors: “Don’t get too close.” Same goes for cameras. It’s for my own protection, really. If I zoom in on my features under the less-than-flattering fluorescent light of the average ladies’ bathroom, I’m treated to an unwelcome trip down memory lane: the history of my battle with cystic acne, a smattering of dark spots and divot-like scars, is written all over my face.
Clearly, something had to change, which is how I ended up as a guinea pig for a new collection from dr. brandt®, the Exclusive Camera-Ready Kit, designed to improve complexions at the micro-level. Let’s just say this kit has an eye for make-or-break detail. It’s armed with four different dr. brandt® products: a full-size Pores No More® Pore Refiner (whose praises I will sing later on), and deluxe mini versions of the Glow Revitalizing Retinol Eye Cream, crease release® with GABA & 3-D LIFT, and my personal favorite, the Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant. In addition to test-driving the wonder kit, I agreed to pose for an up-close, post-trial portrait.
I decided to start getting ready for my close-up three weeks in advance. Concerned with my aforementioned scars, I began with the microdermabrasion scrub, using it twice a week for three weeks. Despite its derm-developed pedigree, this scrub dispenses a delicious, lemony-sugar scent that’s anything but clinical. After three sessions, my battle-worn skin looked noticeably clearer and more even. The pores on my cheeks and nose appeared smaller (though we all know you can’t literally shrink your pores), and the my acne scars started to shrink and fade to a lighter, more livable pink. When I saw myself the other day at the gym without makeup on, I was amazed at how faint the usually-flaming acne scars on my chin looked.
While wrinkles and crow’s feet are less of a concern for 26-year-old me, I applied some of the crease release® to the shallow, horizontal lines that have begun developing on my forehead, and dabbed on the eye cream morning and night. Both products feel lightweight and absorb superquickly—and by daylight, the eye cream gives my under-eye area a noticeable glow.
Finally, the day of my new skin debut arrived. To mark the occasion, I gave myself over to our in-house photographer, the incomparable Tom Newton. Right before the shoot, I applied some of the silky Pores No More® Pore Refiner over my makeup. This nifty balm goes on sheer and feels imperceptibly light, drying to a powdery, veil-like texture. It instantly soaked up the oil on my face, and, as promised, minimized the look of my pores—just in time for the flash of Tom’s camera lens.
After my test-drive with dr. brandt®, I think it might be possible to rewrite history—at least where my skin is concerned. Does the camera love me? While it may not be love just yet, my newly-acquired confidence has laid the foundation for a budding friendship.
