How Many Products Does It Take to Get the No Makeup Look?

I’ve never been one to shy away from makeup—as a former ballerina, I love me some false eyelashes and ridiculously bright lipstick. But most days (given I no longer bourrée across stages) I prefer a minimalist, natural look. So it’s no surprise that I took note when the ‘no makeup’ look cropped up in spring runway shows by designers like Alexander Wang and Balmain.

Since I’m no Rosie Huntington Whiteley, I was curious to see just how many products it would take to achieve that flawless bare-faced appearance. I enlisted the help of our resident makeup artist Nathaniel for my experiment. When all was said and applied, it took 14 total products to give me that “I woke up like this” look. Here’s a rundown of what he used and how:

Skincare is essential to pull this au naturale look off. Nathaniel applied Bobbi Brown Hydrating Eye Cream and Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré to my face to give it a healthy, smooth finish followed by Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer to ensure the makeup stayed put.

To give my skin a subtle sheen, he dabbed Benefit’s illuminating highlighter, Girl Meets Pearl, on my cheekbones before applying Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer in Nude. For extra coverage, Nathaniel dotted Bobbi Brown’s stick foundation around my nose and the creamy concealer under my eyes. Youngblood’s Mineral Perfecting Powder set everything in place.

Clocking in at product number 8, W3LL People’s Hedonist Mineral Bronzer was brushed over my face to warm it up. Then Nathaniel dusted Laura Geller’s Beauty Bronze ‘n Brighten onto the apples of my cheeks to give me an I-just-went-on-vacation glow.

Nathaniel kept my eyes simple, swiping The Balm’s Snobby shadow from the Nude ‘Tude palette all over my lids to brighten them, shading Sultry in the creases and using Sleek as a dry liner to give my eyes some definition. He filled in my brows with Benefit’s ever-reliable Brow Zings and applied one coat of Marcelle’s Xtension Plus Mascara in black.

The fourteenth and final product: Mally’s Lip Magnifier in Soft Nude. It seemed fitting, considering the brand’s founder is the makeup artist for Miss Flawless herself.
