4 Totally Natural Ways to Make Your Summer Glow Last

While we’ll happily ditch our sandals for lace-up booties and swap out our tank tops for cozy sweaters, there is one summer accessory we can’t let go of come September: our sun-dappled skin. “Giving your skin a bronze boost instantly lifts your mood and confidence,” says Shelley Barrett, CEO and Founder of Australian beauty brand ModelCo, who endorses a golden look well into the chilly months. Follow Barrett’s advice for making the seasonal transition without looking like you went to the tanning salon (not that you’d do that, anyway).

Scrub Away Dull Skin

Your skin needs a little extra TLC as you transition from summer into fall, especially if you intend on using any self-tanner. All of that sun and SPF makes it tighter and dryer, so using a hydrating exfoliator is key for a flawless application. Whish’s Exfoliating Body Wash sloughs away dead skin with sugar cane and bamboo extract, while moisturizing with organic coconut oil. And ORIGINS’ GinZing Refreshing Scrub Cleanser gently revives a dull complexion with natural jojoba. Barrett recommends waiting 30 minutes for your skin to calm before applying any tanning products.

Self Tan in Moderation

Subtlety is key when it comes to faking it during the fall. Barrett advises choosing a medium intensity self-tanner, like ModelCo’s Natural Tan Self-Tan Lotion. The formula contains cocoa butter and aloe vera, so it won’t dry out your skin as the temperature drops. For your face, use a product that builds a natural-looking tint over time like St. Tropez Self Tanning Bronzing Lotion Face. Remember to blend, blend, blend into your neck and hairline—use a beautyblender to ensure even coverage in those tricky areas.

Maintain Your Faux Glow

Upkeep is easy with a pressed powder like the ModelCo Bronzer. Barrett likes to use a thick brush to apply the bronzer slightly underneath the cheekbones to contour, then lightly sweep along the forehead and underneath the chin. For a more airbrushed finish, spray on a coat of Temptu’s Airpod Bronzer with the brand’s easy-to-use Flawless Complexion Kit (watch our tutorial on how to use it!). If you’re strapped for time, add a little extra glow to the top of your cheekbones with Laura Geller Beauty’s Bronze-n-Brighten, which gives you a golden sheen and highlights in one easy step. And to give your legs (or whatever skin you’re revealing before it gets too cold) a tan tint, apply Caudalie’s Divine Legs, which firms skin while it imparts a subtle shimmer.
