Get Tousled Hair (Without Looking Like a Hot Mess)

When it comes to perfectly tousled, effortless hair, there's a fine line between chic waves and a tangled mess. And as you've probably learned by now, you can't literally roll out of bed to get that enviable "bedhead look." To help you navigate this tricky mane terrain, follow this insanely easy six-step tutorial:

Step 1. Although it may seem counterintuitive to clean hair pre-tousling, washing with volumizing formulas will amplify your hair without creating frizz. We never stray too far from Number 4’s Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner. The winning duo relies on a blend of natural ingredients to purify, strengthen, and revitalize damaged strands.

Step 2. Towel dry and comb in a quarter-sized dollop of volumizing mousse using a wide-toothed comb. We like Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse, an addictive-smelling styler that thickens the hair shaft.

Step 3. Create a part and divide your hair into two sections, as if you were going to create old school pigtails. Twisting one section of your hair, wrap it into a low mini-bun and secure with bobby pins. Repeat with remaining sections of hair.

Step 4. Air dry or speed up the process by aiming a blow dryer at your buns for a couple minutes. Once your hair is dry, remove the bobby pins and unleash your loose waves.

Step 5. Spritz on a lightweight texturizing spray like amika’s un.done texture spray and use your fingers to gently separate any tight coils of hair. Finish by working a small dab of smoothing serum like TONI&GUY’s Classic Shine Gloss Serum through the ends to smooth them out and give your hair a glamorous sheen without weighing it down.

Step 6. Bask in your tousled hair awesomeness.
