A few years ago, a bunch of my girlfriends and I started hosting rotating “crafternoons.” With nothing more than some art supplies, a few blankets, good music, and lots of snacks, we’d create hours-long creative indoor picnics. Since they’re infinitely cozier than a late night rager—and a lot less stressful than waiting an hour for brunch—I began looking forward to rainy days just for the excuse to plan one with some of my favorite ladies. Feeling crafty? Here are my tips for hosting during the next inevitable downpour:
Pick Your Project(s)
Whether you want to weave friendship bracelets or decorate planters, it’s best to choose your crafts and pick up supplies a few days in advance. Newbies may be more comfortable with pre-made kits from For the Makers, which combine step-by-step directions with all of the supplies you’ll need. DIY pros, on the other hand, will have a field day at Michael’s or Jo Ann’s. Pinterest is an inexhaustible source of inspiration, as are blogs like Oh Happy Day.
Create a Workspace
While a kitchen table will suffice, my preferred “craftspace” is a blanket on the floor, elementary school-style. Grab your favorite old quilt or throw and showcase all of your supplies in the center to allow easy access for your guests.
Load Up on Snacks
What goes better with crafting than delicious treats? Opt for sharable snacks like Chuao Chocolatier Assorted ChocoPod and Emily's Chocolates Chocolate Covered Fortune Cookies.
Prep a Playlist
While popping a movie on is always an option, a good playlist makes a conversation-friendly crafting companion. Create your own on Spotify or head over to Songza to find a curated one just for you. (Hint, hint.)
Break for Cocktails
If your crafternoon lasts into the evening, take a break to make some homespun cocktails. We love the Whiskey Smash, courtesy of Birchbox Man. If you’ve never ventured into bourbon territory, take a look at our beginner’s guide.
A monthly crafternoon date with pals is an easy way to keep in touch, not the mention a fun way to compile a host of giftable crafts for birthdays and holidays.
