Like Mother, Like Daughter: How Moms Shape Our Fashion Sense

As Birchbox’s Community Manager, Juliette Dallas-Feeney tackles every social media task with infectious positivity. Her always-upbeat attitude has left us wondering, “Where does she get it?” Last week we finally got our answer: Dr. Susan Dallas-Feeney, aka Juliette’s awesome mom. In honor of Mother’s Day, Joie gave the ladies free reign at their sunny Soho boutique. Their mission? Find one wardrobe staple for the pair to wear, and then style their outfits according to their own tastes. Here’s what we learned from the Dallas-Feeney shopping spree:

1. You can’t go wrong with an A-line white dress.

After browsing the racks, the twosome finally settled on Joie’s timeless white Norton dress. “We both instantly loved the shape of the dress," said Susan. "It’s very flattering and the piqued fabric is gorgeous.” Juliette added, “It cinches at the waist, which is great when you’re petite!”

2. Stick to chic, neutral-toned heels.

Once the ladies slipped into the perfect-for-spring dress, they played up its sophisticated vibe with classic, nude shoes. While Susan favored a more traditional pair with leather straps and a conservative heel, Juliette fell for the sky-high, fashion-forward Remy stilettos.

3. Invest in quality fabrics.

If there’s one style lesson we picked up from mama Dallas-Feeney, it’s this: Quality comes first. “I’m into fabrics and texture. Good fabrics are an investment—they generally last longer,” she advised. With that in mind, Susan topped the dress with a gorgeous woven blue jacket. Juliette kept it fresh with a fitted denim jacket.

4. Opt for one bold, statement-making accessory.

Rather than piling on bejeweled bangles, massive sunnies, and a boldly patterned scarf, the ladies chose to showcase their personal style with bright leather bags. Juliette opted for a sleek, coral clutch: “It’s the perfect size for my essentials: iPhone, keys, and card holder,” she noted. With the workplace in mind, Susan selected Joie’s large, cobalt Edie tote bag, which has enough space to fit patient files and her laptop.

4. Go easy on the jewels.

“Almost all of my jewelry is from my mom, so her taste has definitely rubbed off on me," said Juliette. Both choose a few delicate bracelets and gold chains. For Susan, favoring demure baubles is a matter of practicality: “I usually wear a watch to listen to patients’ heartbeats," she explained. "It’s like an accessory for me, so I tend to keep everything else simple.”

5. Don’t forget the finishing touches!

After happily hamming it up for the cameras, the Dallas-Feeney women refreshed their makeup before rushing off to lunch. Susan swiped on her go-to staples (blinc Mascara Amplified in Black and Jouer Lip Enhancer) and finished with a quick spritz of Joie’s signature scent Folle de Joie. (Juliette gifted her a full-size bottle last Mother’s Day.) Meanwhile, Juliette tidied her brows with Benefit Gimme Brow. Both agreed that brows are a crucial, yet often overlooked part of a woman’s beauty arsenal. Even during check-ups, Susan tells her patients: "Everything is good—the blood works fine—but the brows!”
